Confession: Amongst the many rising South Korean boy groups in recent years, VIXX has slipped under my radar in spite of having one of the most distinctive discographies in the K-pop industry.

But the sextet’s first performance VIXX Live Fantasia Utopia in Singapore last night had opened my eyes to the dedication and pride that the members have in their work.

Underlying the well-packaged show was also an intricate bond between the members and Starlights (their fans) that is heart-warming and hard to describe with words.

It is definitely difficult for a non-fan to leave the show without developing a liking for the group, and here are 5 reasons why their concert last night would easily convert anyone into a VIXX fan.

It is a common sight for the six boys to be at major music shows and concerts in Korea and they even held the stunning record of selling out all tickets to their first concert tour in Seoul in 10 minutes.

But their concert last night was their first on our sunny island and VIXX had made sure to pack in a stunning list of close to 20 song and dance performances to showcase their best to fans.

The boys kicked off their long-awaited show with their early hit singles On and On, Voodoo Doll and Light Up the Darkness that stuck close to their signature ‘dark’ concept before venturing to more light-hearted songs like Say U Say Me and Rock Your Body.

They also crooned to ballads like Love Letter and Someday, getting fans to sway with the gentle beats and swoon over their occasional winks. But what really sent fans wild was when the boys waved and made heart signs to express their love for them.

While the audience remained amazed at VIXX’s versatility and stamina, the members wow-ed us further with their solo performances.

Despite having a hiccup due to a problem with his microphone, lead singer Ken made a swift recovery and won fans’ praises when he belted the high notes of Adele’s Rolling in the Deep with ease.

Hyuk transformed into Prince Charming, playing the grand piano in his white suit, serenading fans with the romantic ballad Call You Mine and even throwing a rose to a lucky fan.

Then, Ravi switched up the tempo with his heart-pumping rap track Ghost and Leo showed off his high vocal range with his original song Words to Say. Fans are eagerly hoping for these two tracks to be officially released in VIXX's next album (and we get why).

Hongbin proved himself to be the group’s dancing machine in his dance-off that matched the visuals on the panels of LED screens behind him, and leader N brought the series of performances to its peak when he gracefully manoeuvred across the stage while being blindfolded.

It is no mean feat for the members to be steadily belting their lines while being completely on-point with their energetic choreographies, but we observed that Starlights were truly swept off their feet with VIXX’s trump – their charismatic gaze at their audience.

Just imagine having your favourite oppa gazing into your eyes for a good five seconds and you would understand the reason behind the deafening decibels of screams and cheers that sustained throughout their concert last night.

But not everything is about looking cool and sexy, as we got to see the cute side of the boys with their sugar-coated interactions with fans during the intervals between their performances.

VIXX tickled their audience with a short exercise session, asking fans to move along whenever a member had conjured a free-style dance movement to a short snippet of music.

Ken launched the aegyo bomb as he pranced around the stage with his hands clasped. But it was not until he flexed his arm muscles and posed like a macho bodybuilder that the other members were satisfied with him.

Leo jokingly called out a young girl in the audience and teased that she should try out his dance move, but little did we expect him to flaunt his martial arts skills with a flip and a high kick. (Now how are we supposed to mimic that?)

But the cutest member of the night goes to N with his creative (and borderline eccentric) “tickling-your-heart” dance move.

Fans had anticipated a sultry dance from the member when Janet Jackson’s sexy single ‘Feedback’ had played, but were pleasantly surprised when he repeatedly scratched his chest area while sporting an innocent look on his face.

4. VIXX’s dedication to their fans

Language has never been a barrier between Hallyu stars and their fans, and VIXX proved that fact yesterday as they tried their hardest to communicate with Starlights in English.

As their interpreter was frequently lost in translation due to their fast banter, the six boys took the responsibility of translating their conversations whenever they could do themselves. Kudos to their thoughtfulness and effort!

Also, even if their fans were to forget the details of the concert in time to come, we are sure they would never forget VIXX’s repeated gratitude for their attendance yesterday.

Not only did the members start off the show by thanking their fans for being present, they also intertwined video snippets and short messages during the intervals between their performances that constantly showed their appreciation and love for them.

Leader N also summed it up best with his sweet confession to VIXX’s fans in Singapore. “Thank you and we will always look out for Starlights till the end of time.”

Last but not least, VIXX’s fans deserve an honourable mention for their strong support for the six boys yesterday night.

Despite VIXX’s company scrapping the sales of official merchandise like specially designed light sticks and fan towels, a group of Starlights took the initiative to distribute light sticks outside the venue that turned the entire hall into a sea of blue during the concert.

Other fans also created banners that were raised during specific song performances, touching VIXX’s hearts with messages such as “Let’s run together till the end” and “Always by your side”.

Starlights also synchronously recited their fan chants to VIXX’s smash hits like Error and Eternity, proving that their commitment and unity for the group. With their unwavering support and their big-heartedness, one can only wish to join in the big family of love as well.
