AB6IX’s youngest member Daehwi can’t wait to start ‘adulting’

Chances are that the mental image you have of what he wants to do varies differently from reality

AB6IX’s youngest member Daehwi can’t wait to start ‘adulting’

The very mention of ‘adulting’ would pretty much illicit a groan from just about anyone – having to deal with chores, bills and basically the nitty gritty grown-up stuff that we hate to have to do.

Korean rookie group AB6IX’s youngest member, Daehwi, however, was positively bouncing in excitement when he thought of the prospect of becoming an adult. He will turn 19 in 2020, and in South Korea you’re considered an adult once you turn that age.

“My goal for the upcoming year is to become a ‘legal’ adult!” he told Toggle in an interview hours before the group was to take the stage for their first fan meeting in Singapore last Saturday (Jul 27). “I’d like to experience some of the things that only adults can enjoy, such as drinking with friends.”

The other four older members of his group, Woojin, Youngmin, Donghyun and Woong chuckled fondly at how excited Daehwi was, and shared their hopes with us as well.

Youngmin, who is the oldest of the group, mused, “I want to make sure that I become a better leader of the group” as the other members chimed in, telling him that he has been doing a great job so far. Meanwhile, Donghyun had big dreams for the group, which only debuted two months ago.

“I really want AB6IX to go more globally and show different sides of myself to the fans,” he said. Woong, the only one out of the group who has never been a part of another team (more on that in just a bit), added that he hopes to be able to write more songs like Daehwi and Donghyun.

Woojin, who the members shared is quiet in front of strangers, but boisterous when he is with his pals, shared, “I wish that my leg will heal faster so that I can dance until my body wears out.” He has been forced to sit out of the group’s activities after sustaining an ankle injury in June. Even at the fan meeting, he stayed seated for most of the night.

AB6IX’s youngest member Daehwi can’t wait to start ‘adulting’

If you find some members of the group familiar, that’s because Daehwi and Woojin were previously part of the hugely popular Wanna One after finishing in the top 11 of the survival series Produce 101: Season 2, while Youngmin and Donghyun made their debut as project unit MXM in 2017. Woong was previously a trainee in JYP Entertainment, Woollim and YG Entertainment, but never formally made a debut before AB6IX.

Still, these five young men have become one of the most-watched rookie debuts of the year, as Daehwi confessed that they have been “overwhelmed by the amazing feedback we have been receiving. We have to make sure that we live up to expectations, so that we can make our fans proud.”

The super rookies, who kicked off their fan meetings in Seoul earlier this month, are currently on an Asian tour with stops in Tokyo, Taipei, Hong Kong and Bangkok.

We also asked them to give us a little insight of what went on behind the scenes of their first fan meeting. Youngmin explained, “We were very excited and prepared very hard for it since it was our first fan meeting. We wanted to ensure that we showed a different side of ourselves that we weren’t able to during TV performances. We imagined the happy faces of our ABNEW (as their fans are collectively called) while we were preparing, and also right before went up on stage.”

Apart from their performances, the members also paid attention to every little detail, which they chuckled that not everyone knew about. While Donghyun’s change in hair colour was noticed by most, Woong and Youngmin shrugged that nobody noticed their respective hair colour changes.

“I had black hair, but I changed it to blue just before the fan meeting. I guess it wasn’t that noticeable because nobody noticed it!” Youngmin laughed. Instead of changing his hair colour, Daehwi chose to change his lip colour multiple times during the fan meeting. To round up, Woojin confessed that the only thing he changed this time around was footwear – “I always wore slippers while backstage,” he grinned.
