BTS and beyond: Self-produced K-pop groups

K-pop group BTS, who celebrated their fifth debut anniversary on Tuesday (June 12), have more or less conquered the much-coveted American market. From their wins of the Top Social Artiste award at the Billboard Music Awards two years in a row, appearances on The Ellen Degeneres Show as well as the pages of magazines like The Rolling Stones, and collaborations with Western artistes like The Chainsmokers and Steve Aoki, it’s safe to say that the septet has been setting new records left, right and centre.

So, what’s the reason for their success? We reckon a large part of BTS’s appeal with their fans and the general public is the fact that the group is heavily involved in the creation of their own music and albums, something that can be considered something of a rarity in the world of K-pop. The group also often tackles social issues in their songs - as member Suga puts it, “It’s not a BTS album if [we] don’t have a track that criticises society”. From 'No More Dream' to 'Go Go’, fans have been treated to a plethora of thought-provoking and well-produced songs.

Ahead, we’ve put together a list of K-pop groups who’ve promoted with a self-produced title track, from BTS to Winner.

BTS

Latest Title Track: 'Fake Love'
Member Involvement: Leader RM is credited as a lyricist, composer and arranger

'Fake Love' has been killing it worldwide, from winning numerous times on Korea’s weekly music shows, to topping America’s Billboard Digital Song Sales Chart, a feat no other Korean singer has accomplished before. With a catchy chorus and heart-thumping lyrics, it’s no wonder that the song has been doing so well on the charts.

In addition, just three days ago, BTS's rap line, consisting of RM, J-Hope and Suga, dropped their brand new diss track, to the delight of their fans. 'DD Ceremony', which was co-produced by Suga, on their soundcloud, hits back at the naysayers and haters that has plagued them, especially when the group was just starting out.

SEVENTEEN

Latest Title Track: 'Thanks'
Member Involvement: Member Woozi is credited as a lyricist and composer, while Hoshi is credited as a lyricist.

13-member boyband SEVENTEEN debuted in 2015 with the funky ‘Adore U’, gaining traction amongst the public and fans alike for the catchy tune and quirky dance moves. Member Woozi, who was heavily involved in all aspects of production, from writing lyrics, to arranging the song and composing it, received loads of attention for his  songwriting capabilities. He was also aided by leader S.Coups, who is credited as a lyricist for the song.

Fans were further impressed by the fact that fellow member Hoshi, had choreographed and come up with the dance moves for the song, from the arrangement of the 13 members' every line and verse, to the song’s signature pointing gesture. The group then subsequently gained the title of ‘Self-Produced Idols’, and have gone on to greater heights with each release, thanks to the hard work of the members.

(P.S: Did you know that Woozi is the mastermind behind project group I.O.I’s heart-wrenching final single, ‘Downpour’?)

EXID

Latest Title Track: 'Lady'
Member Involvement: Leader LE is credited as a lyricist and composer

EXID shot to fame after a fan-taken video of the group’s member, Hani, dancing to their song, ‘Up & Down’ went viral. Though the dance was what attracted viewers and piqued the attention of the public, it was the song’s catchy tune and earworm lyrics that ensured its continuing success.

Leader LE, who is credited as a lyricist and composer for ‘Up & Down’, as well as a large majority of the group’s songs, has since helped to bring the group to greater heights with similarly catchy follow-up songs, ‘Ah Yeah’, ‘Hot Pink’, and most recently, ‘Lady’.

Latest Title Track: 'Everyday'
Member Involvement: Member Mino and leader Yoon are credited as lyricists and composers, while Hoony is credited as a lyricist.

Winner, who were first shown to the public as Team A through the YG reality survival show WIN: Who Is Next, already had experience writing their own songs and making their own choreographies for the show’s various missions.

After winning the show and making their debut as Winner, the group has continued to have a heavy hand in the creation of their own songs. While former member Nam Taehyun was responsible for many of the group's songs, fellow members Mino and Yoon were also responsible for many of the group’s hits, from the hard-hitting ‘Fear' to the uplifting ‘Smile Again’.

‘Really Really’, 2017’s breakout hit, earned Winner the honour of being the first ever idol group to surpass 100 million streams whilst keeping their ranking in the Top 100 songs chart.

Just like Winner, the members, particularly B.I and Bobby, are heavily involved in the production of their own music, with the duo having written lyrics for all of the songs in their latest album, ‘Return’.

Their latest title track, ’Love Scenario’ struck a chord within the hearts of the public, and earned the boys of iKON the honour of being the second boy group to top more than seven music charts in Korea simultaneously.

Leader Hui has also been making waves for his outstanding performance in Mnet’s music battle show, ‘Breakers’, where eight music producers will have to produce a song based on the theme of the week and perform it in a battle against each other. He eventually placed second, with PENOMECO taking the first place.

The group is known for their forward and sultry image, with hit songs like ‘Abracadabra’ and ‘Sixth Sense’. Member Miryo is lauded as the female idol group member with the most song credits to her name - she worked on songs for the now-disbanded Honey Family, which she was part of, as well as for her own solo releases.

Though the members are more focused on their individual careers now, the group has not disbanded, with the members promising that they will still be releasing songs in the future. We can’t wait!

A large majority of the group’s releases were created by Jinyoung, giving their group their own fresh flavour.

Besides producing music for B1A4, Jinyoung has also produced a number of songs for the project group I.O.I, like ‘When Cherry Blossoms Fade’ and ‘Hold On’.

SPECIAL MENTION: DIA

Though the seven-membered girl group’s last few releases have been, sadly, devoid of any self-composed songs, the group’s 2017 album, ‘YOLO' was chock-full of the member’s own creations, with every track featuring either lyrics or compositions by the girls. Title track ‘Will You Go Out With Me’, was a team effort between members Eunice, Huihyeon, Jenny, Yebin, Eunjin and Chaeyeon, with the first four credited as lyricists and composers, and the latter two as lyricists.
