BTS, TWICE’s Japanese activities reportedly affected by cross-country relations

In short: BTS’s appearance on Asahi TV’s Music Station was abruptly postponed, with some attributing it to the strained ties between South Korea and Japan.

In detail: Last week, South Korea’s Supreme Court ruled that four forced workers were entitled to compensation from Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal Corporation, which has been strongly condemned by Japan. This verdict further strained the already delicate ties between both countries, who are reportedly unlikely to hold talks on the sidelines of upcoming regional conferences.

Why is this relevant in our K-Pop roundup? As a result of this, Korean artistes BTS and TWICE’s activities in Japan have been reportedly affected as well, as BTS’s appearance on Asahi TV’s Music Station was abruptly postponed less than 24 hours before it was scheduled to happen.

The station’s official statement stated that the postponement was due to a controversial T-shirt that one of the members wore, but netizens have pointed out that this incident was over a year ago, and that it was more likely that it was due to the tensions between the two countries, which would make a Korean artiste’s appearance on Japanese national television a point of contention at this time. TWICE, who were previously said to be in talks to attend the NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen, are also reported to have called off all plans due to this.
