South Korean boy group iKON showcased passionate live performances of over 20 tracks - from heartfelt ballads to club-worthy bangers to swag-filled spectacles - at last night’s Continue tour in Singapore, but just as entertaining were the carefree banter, light-hearted jabs and charming camaraderie between the boys.

A particularly amusing highlight happened quite early on in the two-hour showcase, after rousing renditions of hits including ‘BLING BLING’ and ‘Rhythm Ta’. As the septet’s vocal line disappeared backstage to prepare for their performance of ‘Perfect’, rappers Bobby and B.I were tasked with keeping the audience entertained.

After a bit of small talk, during which we learned that B.I spent the day before sleeping and ordering room service, Bobby divided concertgoers into two teams and initiated a singing - and loudness - competition with smash hit ‘Love Scenario’. Although the song was in Korean, the audience impressively nailed every single lyric as they belted their lungs out.

In the end, they declared both sides the victors, and as “punishment” for the boys (or was it a reward for fans?), Bobby and B.I walked up to the end of the extended stage and took turns to scream, “Singapore we love you!”

Even after all this activity, the duo realised that their ballad-belting bandmates were still not ready to take the stage, so they had to find ways to continue their little time-passing routine.

“We’re not aegyo people, so we can’t do that,” said Bobby, referring to the act of making cutesy expressions and gestures. Of course, fans immediately started chanting “Aegyo! Aegyo!” and of course, the idols gave their beloved iKONIC (official name for fans of iKON) what they wanted, with sweet smiles and delicate hand movements. The crowd went wild. Not bad for “not aegyo people”.

And still, it wasn’t time to move on to the next performance yet. “We don’t know what to do now!” cried a comically exasperated-looking Bobby. Fortunately for the poor guy, the vocal team finally took over a few seconds later.

More shenanigans took place during a later talk segment when Bobby, who seems to enjoy making everything a competition, asked fans to vote for which member is better-looking. It was here that we got to enjoy a hilarious exchange between Jay (formerly known as Jinhwan) and Song (formerly known as Yunhyeong).

“My face is better than Jinhwan’s,” deadpanned Song. Not to be outdone in the sass department, Jinhwan later shot back, “You should work harder on your face because Chanwoo’s [now known as Chan] is better!” Ouch.

Even B.I, iKON’s leader, was not exempt from such ruthless ribbing. After someone suggested he flaunt some muscle, he compromised by rolling up his sleeve to show his wrist, but the attention shifted to the tiny, pastel-coloured watch he was wearing instead.

“There’s rainbows on there, man!” exclaimed Bobby, clearly in disbelief about his group mate’s fashion choices. “It seems like you stole that watch from your sister!”

When Jay suggested that B.I give the accessory to his sibling, B.I responded with conviction, “No. It’s mine. I like it.” “You’re a super mean brother,” Jay accused, as the audience - us included - roared with laughter at the entire sitcom-like scene.

These amusing antics also managed to find their way into the performances. For instance, the members sometimes tried to hug or even kiss each other, and for ‘Best Friend’, Bobby pranced on stage in what we think was a sea lion or seal onesie costume.

Before we knew it, it came time for the encore and for fans to hold up banners that read “We will protect iKON”, which the group noticed and commented on. “No, we will protect you,” declared Jay proudly (awww), after which B.I, looking and sounding like a lost little lamb, piped up, “Please protect me.” Double awww

If there’s one thing we’re looking forward to the next time iKON come back to our sunny shores, it would be these casual, candid interactions between the members and with the audience. That, and also Bobby and B.I’s return as concert interval kings.
