KARD kicks off Asian leg of tour with a bang

These days, new K-Pop groups debut on an almost-weekly basis, but even then, it’s hard to find a co-ed group in the sea of idols. Cue KARD, the co-ed group that’s made up of J.Seph, B.M, Somin and Jiwoo – that’s two men and two ladies for you.

While some may think that it’s just a marketing gimmick to make the group stand out from the crowd, we realised at their first Asian stop of their WILD KARD tour in Singapore held yesterday (Jan 21) that this is, in fact, a winning formula for the group. The ladies’ powerhouse vocals paired with the gentlemen’s impressive rap was a perfect pairing, and definitely left the crowd wanting for more.

Even before their official debut with Hola Hola in July last year, the quartet released project singles, including the popular ‘Oh NaNa’ and ‘Rumour’, which were so well-received by fans that they charted extremely well on international music platforms.

What’s KARD’s wish for 2018?

After touring the USA and Europe, it’s no wonder that KARD was all raring to go during the first of their four Asian stops last night – after Singapore, they will also be hitting Hong Kong, Taiwan and Manila.

Apart from performing their own songs, the group also took on the challenge of performing covers during their WILD KARD in Singapore, with Jiwoo presenting her version of WINNER’s ‘Really Really’ and Somin serenading the crowd with Taeyeon’s ‘Fine’.

They also took the opportunity to answer some of the fan’s burning questions, during which they declared that their wish for 2018 is to come out tops on a weekly music programme, hinting that they’ve got some exciting music that’s in the works that they can’t wait to show their fans.

Prior to arriving in Singapore, however, the group sat down to answer Toggle’s questions in a video interview, where they told us a bit more about themselves.

How does KARD feel about their unique way of debuting?

Toggle: KARD had a very unique way of debuting, releasing songs and going on tour even before your ‘official’ debut. How did you prepare for all of this, and looking back at how far you’ve come, how do you feel about it?

Somin: We really prepared a lot and worked hard for it. It was the first time we worked on certain genres, so we had some difficulties. But we got a lot of support and help from our producer and choreography teacher, so our end result came out really great. Looking back at that time, it was filled with lots of moments that I was grateful for. It gave us an opportunity to try something new, and if we look at how we did at first, I realised how much we’ve improved.

Jiwoo: My parents told me that they realised after KARD’s official debut, KARD’s overseas tour before the debut really helped us. Through preparing for the tour, we practiced live vocal performance, ways to interact with fans, and how not to be nervous on stage. We managed to do all of this thanks to our overseas tour, so my parents felt proud.

J.Seph: Oh, my dad said the exact same thing to me!

B.M: My mum, too.

J.Seph: Oh, what?!

Jiwoo: Everyone said the same thing.

Somin: That’s why having lots of experiences is very important.

Jiwoo: So it’s great that all these experiences helped us debut successfully and show great performances without being too nervous.

Looking back, what does KARD think of their debut year?

Toggle: You’ve had an amazing 2017 and have also been received very warmly by the fans. Looking back, how well do you think you did both personally and as a group, and which areas do you hope to improve on in 2018?

B.M: 2017 was a very life-turning year for all four of us - we debuted, toured around the world.  Well, not the entire world, but we got to visit so many different countries, met our overseas fans in person and performed on stage, so it was a very meaningful year. Although it was just the start for us, we got to do so much and had so much growth. It was a good year, man! 2017 was good!

Somin: 2017 was a year that I could not relieve tension because there were so many nervous moments. Looking back that year, it was a year of fulfillment, but in the midst of it, I feel like there were moments that I missed out - moments that I wish I fulfilled more. However, because I was exhausted, I had to miss those moments. So I hope to enjoy them more this year.

J.Seph: When being thousands of miles away from home, I would sometimes get teary in secret. However, in terms of the overseas tours we did, I was very grateful that so many fans came to see us, supported us even although we started from nothing, cried for us and enjoyed with us. So I think I got a lot of pure energy from seeing all that. It was a year that I was very grateful for.

Somin: We really gained lots of energy last year.

How are the KARD members different when they're on and off stage?

Toggle: KARD has the image of a very friendly, approachable group that also sizzles on stage. How similar or different are each of the members compared to your on-stage personas, and what goes through your mind whenever you put your stage face on?

Somin: When we are preparing to get on stage, we would sometimes try to control ourselves in preparation for going on stage, but we usually tell jokes to each other and have fun. But as soon as we get on stage, we try to be very professional and express our charms on stage because we’re in charge of the stage.

Jiwoo: Even though 'You In Me' is quite a dark-themed song, we don’t just limit ourselves strictly to that concept and act on it. Instead, having lots of energy actually help us express that concept on stage even better. It helps us express ourselves more differently and truthfully. It is also good for us to express ourselves as how we are.

Toggle: What are your New Year resolutions and goals as a group and as individuals?

B.M: Scoring the 1st place in a music program for 2 weeks!

Somin: 1st place! Let’s go!

B.M: We can do it! We can do it!

J.Seph: It really is possible.

Somin: And I hope to stay healthy

B.M: We should live a healthy life

Jiwoo: I hope to stay healthy and happy!
