NCT 127 were the biggest hit - and also the sweetest softies - on Singapore’s stage

The K-pop boy group savoured every moment of their final ‘NEO CITY’ tour stop in town over the weekend.

Most folks would usually associate NCT 127 with robust dance moves, heavy beats and basslines, and a generally fierce image. After all, most of their lead singles have been hard-hitting, speaker-busting bangers that won’t sound out of place in a nightclub.

However, not long after their individual introductions at Saturday (Jul 20) night’s NEO CITY - The Origin tour stop in Singapore, the K-pop group began to slow things down a bit with ‘Fly Away With Me’, ‘Back 2 U (AM 01:27)’, and ‘Angel’, significantly calmer departures compared to earlier tracks like the explosive (pun intended) ‘Cherry Bomb’ and the rousing ‘Limitless’.

“We usually show very strong performances on stage, but we’re actually very warm-hearted, so we wanted to show that side of us to you guys,” Jaehyun explained.

Johnny seemed to be fond of this milder concept: when Mark suggested they return to something powerful next, he responded in mock disapproval, “I know you wanna show off your rap and everything, but I think we should keep this warm and romantic mood.”

Fans were up for that too, if the deafening cheers were any indication.

Sure enough, ballads and ear-melting vocals took centre stage over the next few sets, starting with ‘Jet Lag’. Jaehyun, Doyoung, and Taeil then dazzled as a trio with ‘Timeless’, before being joined by Yuta, Jungwoo, and Haechan for the heartbreaking ‘No Longer’.

A brief piano solo by Johnny concluded this serene detour, and soon, their energetic regular programming resumed with, well, ‘Regular’.

The boys both wowed and worried us during their performance of ‘Wake Up’, which had them nimbly climbing up and down and showing off all sorts of other moves on a tall steel structure. We found ourselves holding our breaths while Taeyong was perched precariously on the very top of the frame, spitting bars at the speed of light for ‘Baby Don’t Like It’.

Thankfully, no boy band member was harmed in the making of that highly entertaining segment (and no pants tore during their famous ‘Cherry Bomb’ leg split either).

The boys share their touching final thoughts

The rest of the showcase seemed to pass by in a flash (you know what they say about time and having fun), and before we knew it, the members were sharing their final thoughts. As it was the very last stop of their tour, which began six months ago and brought them to 10 countries, it wasn’t surprising that the boys had loads to say.

Mark and Yuta were candid about all the hard work they poured into the show, admitting that it was “physically tiring at times” and that it “wasn’t smooth-sailing all the way”. “There were hard times and there were fun times, but it was a learning experience, and what kept us going was your support,” said Yuta.

Johnny admitted that he couldn’t help but to keep “looking around a little more than usual, at the ceiling, and at corners” of the Singapore Indoor Stadium. “I wanted to really take in everything and take a mental picture of how beautiful you guys look from up here on stage,” he grinned.

Haechan delivered a particularly moving message thanking his bandmates. “My brothers were concerned about my safety because I got injured in the beginning of the tour,” he said, referring to the shinbone fracture he suffered in December last year.

“I felt so apologetic because I thought I was being a burden to my brothers [here, fans immediately shout ‘No!’], but they were so supportive,” continued the maknae (youngest member). “I’m so thankful to them for being my pillars of strength. I promise we’ll come back with cuter and sexier stages, so do wait for us!”

They can certainly count on their NCTzens to do just that.
