Our favourite moments from past Mnet Asian Music Awards shows

Over the years, the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) has blessed us with a seemingly endless plethora of utterly epic live performances from the biggest names in K-pop. From elaborate stage set-ups to once-in-a-lifetime cross-group collaborations, the annual awards ceremony has provided no shortage of dramatic visual and auditory delights.

That said, sometimes, it’s the little moments - some of which happen off-stage or even off-camera - that leave the biggest impression. As we look forward to this year's show in Nagoya on December 4, we look back at nine of our favourite things that happened at past MAMA events (besides the actual performances themselves, because this gallery would probably spiral out of control.

Read on for more.

BTS’s emotional acceptance speech

Where: 2016 MAMA, Hong Kong

These days, it’s practically de rigueuer for BTS to emerge from an awards show with a big bunch of trophies, but back in 2016, when their star was still in the relatively early stages of its meteoric rise, a daesang (grand prize) was a really big deal (it still is, but you know what we mean).

While their first ever daesang (for Album of the Year at the 2016 Melon Music Awards) was received with shock and smiles, picking up Artist of the Year at the 2016 MAMA two weeks later was a sight that put the “tears” and ‘Blood, Sweat and Tears’: a bleary-eyed RM struggled to hold himself together while delivering their acceptance speech, while Jin and Jungkook cried in silence beside him (while still looking strangely attractive, we might add).

However, one particularly touching yet heart-wrenching moment was when the usually cool, calm and collected Suga suddenly broke down in sobs without warning. BRB, grabbing some Kleenex.

Their emotional acceptance speech at the 2016 MAMA had nothing on the floodgates that opened last year. During their speech, they announced that they had a tough year and that the topic of disbandment was discussed. Thankfully, they decided against it and are back stronger than ever.

When Seungri snuggled up to Sehun

Where: 2015 MAMA, Hong Kong

Remember when this precious scene unfolded and went viral? In the middle of his performance of ‘Bae Bae’ with his group, BIGBANG maknae* Seungri was suddenly found in the audience, more specifically, in EXO maknae* Sehun’s lap, stroking his head like an affectionate older brother as the latter shyly covered his face. Cuteness overload.

Sehun’s band mate Chanyeol was not spared from Seungri’s attention either, getting a nod that caused him to cup his own face in his hands with a bashful “hyung** noticed me!” expression. More cuteness overload.

Can we have more squeal-inducing interactions like this at all future MAMA shows, please?

When JYP’s performance traumatised poor GOT7 and TWICE

Where: 2015 MAMA, Hong Kong

JYP Entertainment head honcho J.Y. Park’s sizzling (or at least, that’s probably what he meant it to be) performance of ‘Elevator’ with a sexy dance partner was enough to scar a lot of viewers for life, but the effect was extra damaging for the poor kids under his label, GOT7 and TWICE.

While both groups started excitedly cheering for their mentor at first, their expressions quickly changed from happiness to horror as they witnessed various thrusting and touching movements that they will never be able to unsee. Our favourite reactions from the bunch include Jackson dramatically clutching his heart, and Jeongyeon holding on to Jihyo (and basically just most of TWICE trying to cover their eyes).

Well, what would you do if you had to watch your boss gyrating with a scantily clad woman on stage?

Where: 2015 MAMA, Hong Kong

Once again, Fat Gor shows everyone just how awesome and down-to-earth he is (besides being a selfie king and taking public transport despite his mega-star status). During PSY’s performance of ‘Gangnam Style’, the live feed cut to Yun Fat doing the famous “horse dance” in the audience with the widest grin on his face, clearly having a whale of a time.

A while later, PSY ventured down to the audience to boogie a little bit with BIGBANG before inviting Yun Fat to join him for a little dance-off, and of course, the veteran actor gamely obliged. Who did it better, you may ask? Well, in this case, everyone’s a winner in our books.

JJ Lin bringing down the house and uniting K-Pop fandoms

Where: 2018 MAMA, Hong Kong

Music is definitely a language of its own, as JJ demonstrated at last year's show. His performance might not have been in the first language of those in the audience, but seeing all K-Pop fandoms uniting and cheering for him definitely warmed our hearts.

The camera’s focus on Nichkhun during Tiffany’s speech

Where: 2014 MAMA, Hong Kong

Talk about a cameraman with zero chill. When Girls’ Generation’s Tiffany received the golden gong for K-POP Fans’ Choice (Female) on behalf of her subunit, Girls’ Generation-TTS, the live feed cut three times to her then-boyfriend, 2PM’s Nichkhun, who couldn’t do much except to smile and wave awkwardly as the rest of the audience went wild.

Sadly (to us anyway), Tiffany only thanked fans in her acceptance speech and made no mention of Nichkhun. Oh well, seeing him act all flustered when he appeared on camera was adorable and entertaining enough.

Troublemaker’s kiss (feat. T.O.P and G-Dragon’s hilarious reactions)

Where: 2013 MAMA, Hong Kong

Before Hyuna shocked the world with her relationship status (y’know, her self-announced dating confirmation with PENTAGON’s E’Dawn), she shocked the world with the two steamy MAMA stages she shared with her Troublemaker duo mate Hyunseung (formerly of the group formerly known as BEAST) in 2011 and 2013, both of which involved full-on mouth-to-mouth action (and not of the resuscitation kind).

A fan happened to capture the reactions of BIGBANG’s T.O.P and G-Dragon from the audience during the moment Troublemaker’s lips lock, and it is amusing to say the least: T.O.P’s eyes grow as wide as saucers, while G-Dragon falls backward into his seat, hand covering a presumed gasp, in shock.

To be honest, we don’t know why T.O.P would be so stunned - back at the 2008 MAMA (then still known as the Mnet Km Music Festival), he himself made waves when he planted a peck on Lee Hyori’s lips on stage. Yes, that Lee Hyori. Perhaps he had a flashback?

Siwon’s pre-performance skit in the audience

Where: 2011 MAMA, Singapore

If you’ve sat in the Singapore Indoor Stadium sometime within the past seven years, there’s a chance - albeit a slim one - that you’ve been in the very same seat as Super Junior’s Siwon.

We’re not kidding. In 2011, when our little red dot played host to MAMA, the K-pop legends put on an epic and ultra-dramatic performance with an introduction that reminded us of a theme park attraction, with the sound of sirens and helicopters, and the premise of a dystopian society where music is banned.

After showing a poor girl wearing headphones getting dragged off by guards, the live feed switched to more anti-music police scouring a section of the seated audience for more criminals - and to Siwon sitting amongst the concertgoers. He gets up, a choreographed fight ensues between him and his hunter, he wins, puts on headphones, and the intro for ‘Superman’ starts to play as he and band mate Eunhyuk are lowered to the stage on hanging platforms.

So extra, but so good.
