Someone tried asking Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson for an Avengers: Endgame spoiler

The Hollywood actress is in Singapore with Samuel L. Jackson and Gemma Chan to promote Marvel’s first female-fronted flick

Another year, another superhero blockbuster event in Singapore. We Lion City natives are a lucky bunch indeed.

The latest stars to grace our sunny shores are Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson (who plays the titular character, the first female fighter to front the Marvel cinematic franchise), Samuel L. Jackson (who returns in his iconic role as Nick Fury, albeit a younger, two-eyed one), and Gemma Chan (who does a complete 180 from the elegant Astrid in Crazy Rich Asians to become a blue-skinned alien sniper named Minn-Erva).

The trio was joined by directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck as they held a press conference at Marina Bay Sands this morning (Feb 14), before preparing to walk the red carpet at a fan event tonight. For about 15 minutes, they discussed a number of topics, from the gruelling physical prep to… whether Captain Marvel is the key to defeating the murderous Thanos?

Or at least, the latter is what one particularly courageous and hopeful reporter attempted to find out during the Q&A session. For those not in the know (and who don’t mind a major spoiler), Captain’s Marvel’s appearance was first hinted in a post-credits scene from Avengers: Infinity War, after most of the population in the film – half, to be exact – had been wiped out.

“That is a really great question…that I absolutely cannot answer,” responded Brie with a grin, drawing laughter and applause from the floor. “But more power to you for asking!” Oh well, you’ll never know if you don’t try.

(Continued on next slide: How did Brie and Gemma prepare for their roles?)

How did Brie and Gemma prepare for their roles?

While we’ll have to wait until the next Avengers film (titled Endgame) to see if – another spoiler alert –  Captain Marvel succeeds in reversing the devastating effects of Thanos’s gauntlet-armed snapping, she certainly seems to be the woman for the job, as she is touted as one of the most powerful superheroes of them all.

Gearing up for such a butt-kicking part required Brie, 29, to embark on an intense nine-month fitness journey. “It changed me so much,” she said. “It changed my mind and the way I viewed the world, especially martial arts. Sometimes I would see a guy and be like, ‘I could totally throw him right now.’ (Laughs)”

Of course, the workouts weren’t always easy (“Sometimes you end up on the floor crying and begging for it to stop”), and neither was filming, but Brie claimed, “Some of my favourite days were when we were doing the fight scenes because it was this new skill I was learning. One of the first sequences I did was with Jude [Law], and I remember being in a car on the way back after 16 hours of filming, all covered in cuts and bruises, and just being ecstatic.”

For Gemma, 36, her prep involved kickboxing and sniper training, but the end of the day, one of her biggest concerns while filming was, “Trying not to hit myself in the face with my own rifle.” “But I loved it!” she beamed. “It was great to play a character that was sarcastic and with a lot of sassy one-liners.”

And of course, joining one of the biggest movie franchises in the world was a huge plus too. “Who wouldn’t want to be part of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe)? It’s the coolest club in town!”
