Born Shawn Corey Carter, the unknown star was raised in one of the most dangerous neighbourhoods in America – the Marcy projects in Brooklyn. Now, Jay-Z often writes about his time living there with his mother and siblings. In the song ‘You Must Love Me’, he revealed when he was 12 years old, he shot his brother when he caught him trying to steal his jewellery.

The young rapper attended school with fellow future hip-hop superstars The Notorious B.I.G and Busta Ryhmes, However, he never graduated and took to the streets to deal crack cocaine. Jay-Z admitted: “It was either you’re doin’ it or you was movin’ it.” Jay-Z also revealed he was shot at three times during his drug dealing days. Luckily, the bullets never hit him despite being shot from only six feet away.

Jay-Z established himself as a rapper with his own label Roc-A-Fella in 1995, signing a distribution deal with Def Jam in 1997. Although things were going great, in December 1999, Jay-Z fell back into his old hustler ways and stabbed record executive Lance "Un" Rivera. The hip-hop megastar believed Rivera was behind the bootlegging of ‘Vol. 3...’ and stabbed him in a nightclub. He surrendered to the police the following evening and was released on $50,000 bail. Jay-Z was later charged with a second degree felony and sentenced to three years probation.

In 2008, Jay-Z became the first major hip-hop artist to headline the Glastonbury festival. Although the tickets sold quickly, Oasis rocker Noel Gallagher questioned the rapper’s presence at the traditionally guitar-driven festival. The outspoken musician said: “I’m not having hip-hop at Glastonbury, no way, no, no. It’s wrong.” In response to Noel’s comments, Jay-Z opened his set with a tongue-in-cheek cover of Oasis’ iconic song ‘Wonderwall’, a track he admitted he often played at his New York restaurant.

JAY Z became involved in philanthropic activity and in 2003 he founded with his mother the organisation ‘The Shawn Carter Foundation’. Together, they aimed to assist eligible students facing socio-economic hardships through college. It was in 2006 when he met with United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan at the foundation’s headquarters in New York City. The rap star continued to donate money anonymously across his career as it was later revealed he quietly set up a trust for the children of the late Sean Bell.
