“Wait – is that the end?” was what went through our minds when former Westlife lead singer Shane Filan waved goodbye and stepped off the stage, after completing his first solo concert yesterday (Mar 10) at the Coliseum in Resorts World Sentosa.

It seems we aren’t the only ones in denial as floodlights filled the space to indicate the end of the concert, sparking collective groans from the 1500-strong crowd.

Indeed the show, which ran slightly over an hour, served an amazing throwback and created new memories for fans as the 38-year-old singer performed oldies but goodies from his former days with popular Irish boyband Westlife, and also brought newer songs from his recent third solo album Love Always, released last year.

Shane did not keep fans waiting as he took the stage at 8pm sharp, performing the symbolic ‘Everything to Me’, his first solo release in 2013 since Westlife’s disbandment in 2012.

He then killed the notes in his title track, Jamie Scott’s ‘Unbreakable’, and NSYNC’s 2001 hit ‘This I Promise You’, giving fans a taste of Love Always, which consists a mix of ballad classics he covered as well as several original tracks.

During the songs, the singer did not fail to work his charms, calling out “This I promise you, Singapore!” spontaneously, inciting wild cheers from the crowd with his affectionate shout-out.

With introductions to his new album done, Shane proceeded to take fans on a trip down memory lane, as he rolled out all-time crowd favourites from Westlife’s repertoire of iconic hits.

Fans erupted into excited cheers as a familiar melody began, a song that “didn’t make it” on any Westlife albums (it officially made the Love Always album last year), but blew up to become a massively popular wedding march in Asia when it was leaked in 2010 - ‘Beautiful in White’, Shane’s solo demo track from 2006.

We’re midway through the concert and thoroughly basking in the mood of the moment when Shane paused and addressed the crowd.

“I realised you’ve all been watching the concert through your phones!” the singer remarked, drawing sheepish laughs from the crowd, “How about we put down our phones for this next song.”

What a timely reminder, as ‘What About Now’ is next in line, a touching reminder for fans to find the love they could have lost over time.

While most fans happily obliged with the singer’s request, many couldn't resist snapping a few more shots of the Irish heartthrob, something he noticed and cheekily called them out for.

You can’t blame them, with Shane successfully completing two shows in our Lion City over the past two months (the singer held an intimate showcase to a sold-out crowd of 200 Singaporean Filaners in Esplanade Annexe Studio in February), we are not quite sure when the crooner will be back for his next act.

During the show, two lucky fans drew envy from the crowd when they were personally picked by the singer to receive signed posters, a privilege Shane awarded to fans “at the back” of the crowd, because he loves everyone “equally”.

The fun then continued with the groovy ‘Uptown Girl’, which got fans busting lively dance moves and singing along at the top of their voices.

All good things must come to an end and it was time for Shane to deliver one of his last songs for the night – the heart-warming classic ‘You Raise Me Up’.

The lights waned to form a beautiful sea of bobbing lights, as fans chorused the song together in soft tones amidst sentimental ‘goodbyes’ and promises to return soon. We bade the singer farewell for the night and left with hearts filled once again with nostalgic memories.
