‘Infinity War’ stars have “the coolest fan event” in Singapore

Marvel fans in Singapore are a lucky bunch indeed: in the span of a few short years, our humble Little Red Dot has played host to a number of superhero superstars, from Tom Holland (who plays Spider-Man) to Chris Evans (Captain America) and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Last night, we once again welcomed a group of Hollywood heavyweights to our sunny shores as Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Karen Gillan (Nebula) and director Joe Russo were in town to promote the highly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War and to meet fans on the purple carpet at Marina Bay Sands last night.

To nobody’s surprise, all 7,000 registration slots (4,000 for the main Event Hall outdoors and 3,000 for one of the exhibition halls) were filled up in an instant, with countless devotees already waiting at the gates long before they opened at 7am. Some very resilient folks were even said to have queued since the previous evening. That is some intense fan love right there.

Joe and Infinity War executive producer Trinh Tran were the first to step foot on the purple carpet to sign autographs and take selfies with lucky fans. Karen, literally sparkling in a silver metallic dress, arrived shortly after and was soon joined by Benedict and Robert, who roused arguably the bigger pandemonium upon their arrival (random chants of their names would suddenly start to rise every now and then).

The celebrities mingled with the crowd for about an hour before taking to the stage one by one, each hailed by a dramatic entrance tied to their respective character. However, it was the stars themselves that were left the most impressed by the event.

“This is fantastic, look at all of you!” gushed Robert as he observed the cheering mass in front of him. “This has to be the coolest fan event I’ve ever done.” Benedict concurred earlier on, saying, “This is just incredible, it’s utterly surreal. You’re the best fans, you really are.” Awww…

For about 15 minutes, fans enjoyed witnessing a live Q&A session between Joe and the actors, who shared various anecdotes about working on Infinity War, which is touted as one of the biggest films of all time (no big deal).

Karen, for instance, let on about the sumptuous meals they got to enjoy, courtesy of the very generous Robert. “He gets all of the cast together to socialise and gives us the most beautiful cuisine,” she said, to which Robert quipped, “That’s why the budgets have ballooned.”

Joe also shared that although Josh Brolin seems absolutely intimidating and terrifying as the powerful villain Thanos, he looked “fairly ridiculous for most of the time” they were actually shooting, thanks to the giant headpiece, chestpiece and large fake arms he had to don for the role (we’ll try not to have that image in mind when we are watching the film or it’ll ruin the magic).

But perhaps the most surprising thing we learned was that, according to Robert, even the actors themselves were “shooting scenes blind” the whole time (“We don’t know what they might mean”), as Joe, his brother and co-director Anthony, and Trinh went to great lengths to preserve the utmost secrecy of the final product, including releasing different versions of the script to prevent leaks.

One thing’s for sure though: we have a new bromance to look forward to. “I hate to say this but I’m sorry, Mark Ruffalo,” said Robert. “The ‘Science Bros’ [Ed’s note: a term for the friendship between Tony Stark and Mark’s character Bruce Banner] thing is over - it’s now about me and the Batch [Cumberbatch, that is].”

We’re sorry too, Mark, but that’s something we can definitely roll with.
