Robert Downey Jr. (also affectionately known as RDJ) says whatever he wants to, whenever he wants to – but unlike his iconic armoured counterpart from the Marvel universe, his words bring smiles and giggles instead of sighs and groans.

We learned this charming fact first-hand during this morning’s Avengers: Infinity War press conference at Marina Bay Sands. The 53-year-old Hollywood heavyweight, who plays Iron Man (or Tony Stark) is currently in town with Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Karen Gillan (Nebula), as well as director Joe Russo and executive producer Trinh Tran to promote the highly anticipated blockbuster. The superstars will also walk the red carpet at a public fan meeting tomorrow night (April 16).

But yes, back to RDJ. During the 25-minute Q&A segment with local and international press, he could not help but to pipe up with a witty remark every now and then, even while his colleagues were in the middle of responding to a query.

For instance, when Karen was gushing over the surreal feeling of having her own action figure (each actor had his or hers displayed in front of them), he quipped, “They’re on sale – you can buy one later.” When an errant reporter’s cell phone went off loudly in the middle of the session, he reacted without missing a beat, “I’m sorry, I have to get that.”

Even the spotlights pointed at the stage were not spared. “Can we turn the lights a little brighter on us? I want to go fully blind,” he deadpanned, as the floor roared with laughter at his cheekiness.

Robert also wasn’t afraid to shy away from spontaneously roasting his director’s supposed lack of punctuality. “Joe was the last one to show up backstage,” he snitched. “Let me tell you how this went: I was there first, then Karen showed up, then Benedict frolicked in, and then he [gestures towards Joe] traipsed in.”

But in the end, it was the auteur that had the last laugh – and the loudest round of applause – with his stinging retort: “After a year of waiting around on set, I told them to tell me when they get there.”

(Continued on next slide: ‘Infinity War’ could be Robert’s favourite Marvel film?)

Of course, this doesn’t mean that Robert shied away from providing sincere and insightful answers when needed.

Sharing his thoughts on being involved in what is touted as the biggest film in the multi-billion dollar grossing franchise, he mused, “We might be making the movies but we’re also fans and critics of our own work and always want to try and make them better, but this time, I think we might’ve nailed it.”

He continued with his unabashed – and most importantly, spoiler-free – praise of the flick when asked which of the many jewels in the Marvel Cinematic Universe crown is his favourite.

“We won’t be able to have Infinity War without Doctor Strange, and I think Guardians of the Galaxy was such a dark horse, but recently, I thought Thor: Ragnarok was so mind-blowing,” he said, before adding, “But by the time I see [Infinity War], it’ll probably be my favourite.”

Robert also hinted at a battle scene that could be even more epic than the much raved-about airport sequence in Captain America: Civil War. “One thing creatives don’t want to do is to have a bigger repeat of something that’s already worked so well, so without giving anything away, the challenge this time was, how do you top something that’s already been executed well before?”

As if we weren’t already impatient enough for Infinity War to hit cinemas two weeks from now.

Robert, Benedict and Karen may be the ones starring in the movies, but they all agreed that Trinh and Joe “are the ones with superpowers” and deserve their own action figures as well.

“While the rest of us went out to do other projects, they were shooting this for a year and were locked up in an editing bay that was like a cavernous abandoned ship together, so thank you,” said Robert, while Benedict commended them and other producers who managed to arrange all the actors’ schedules, something he dubbed “a small miracle” in itself.

Joe acknowledged the seemingly impossible task of getting so many of Tinseltown’s biggest names in the same room. “I think we shut down Hollywood for a year because we had every actor in the business working somewhere on this movie!”

Karen Gillan is glad to have survived multiple Marvel films

While most baddies face their end not long before the credits start rolling, the 30-year-old Scottish beauty’s blue-skinned, bald-headed assassin character has lived to see her third Marvel film, after the first two Guardians of the Galaxy instalments.

“It’s very exciting to get to be in more than one Marvel movie,” she gushed. “Initially [Nebula] is a villain but we eventually learn her back story and start to question whether she’s really a villain or not.”

“If there ever were…I hope there aren’t,” was Benedict’s frank answer to an inquisitive Sherlock fan who wanted to know if there are Sherlock Holmes references in this movie (for those in the dark, both the British thespian, 41, and Robert have played the famed fictional detective). Oh well, let’s just let Iron Man be Iron Man and Doctor Strange be Doctor Strange, okay?

The director shared a hilarious anecdote about being halfway through shooting when someone suddenly asked, “Where’s [Jeremy] Renner?” Fret not, fans, Joe promised that they “have a very interesting story cooked up for Hawkeye” in Avengers 4.

Like he said: patience is a virtue.
