Tom Holland would abuse Spider-Man’s powers in real life?

The first thing we noticed when we walked into the Marina Bay Sands hotel room for our interview with Tom Holland was a basket full of Spider-Man goodies beside the star’s chair. We casually asked him about it as we waited for the cameras to be set up.

“This is really cool,” he said, holding up a water bottle with several mini plastic Spider-Men on it, before leaning down to pick up more merchandise – we never found out for sure, but we assumed they were gifts from fans – to show to us. “And I’ve got these,” he said in a sing-song “ta-da!”-like tone.

This laidback, comfortable vibe continued throughout our fleeting four-minute conversation with the 21-year-old Brit. Sure, one of Marvel Studios’ brightest new stars was right in front of us, but it also felt like we were chatting with a new friend – well, a new friend who is set to headline a blockbuster trilogy and be part of upcoming Avengers instalments, but still.

After his impressive introduction in last year’s Captain America: Civil War, the cinema world’s latest web-slinging superhero has finally gotten his own flick, Spider-Man: Homecoming, which hits theatres here this Thursday (July 6). The film also stars Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr., Zendaya, Marisa Tomei and 20-year-old newcomer Jacob Batalon, who was in Singapore with Tom to attend the junket and meet local fans last month.

From what we gathered during our half-hour sneak peek of the show, Spider-Man: Homecoming looks to be a fun, light-hearted watch, which is why it wasn’t surprising to find out that the on-set atmosphere was just as cheery and convivial.

“Everyone was having a good time,” said Jacob, who plays Spider-Man/Peter Parker’s best friend Ned Leeds, adding that he and Tom were the resident troublemakers of the bunch. “We’d tease each other and try to make each other laugh on camera to see who would break first. [Who lost?] I’d say Tom; I’m a lot more professional than he is. (laughs)”

Tom readily admitted to his defeat when we brought it up. “Jacob’s so funny; once, we had to eat chips for a campaign and when I turned around, he was trying to stuff 10 of them in his mouth!” he recalled. “I don’t think we ever got the shot we needed because I was laughing so much.”

Another time the young actor found it hard to control his chuckles was when a crew member nearly took a tumble, but tried to play it cool.

“I’ll tell you about a really funny accident,” he started off, a cheeky smile already creeping onto his face. “I was sitting on top of scaffolding, and our stunt coordinator George Cottle tried to climb up to give me a slice of pizza so I could eat up there, but he slipped and cracked his shin on a board!”

He continued, looking very amused at the memory, “You know when someone falls over and they pretend no one saw? Well, he stood up and (strikes nonchalant pose), but when he looked up I was just laughing! That was probably the funniest thing that happened to me.”

Something far less entertaining went down in the house shared by the actors during the course of filming, as shared by Jacob, “A spider was crawling through the garage and we tried to kill it, but as soon as we smashed it, [we realized] it had eggs on its back, so all these little spiders came out of it. That was awful.”

Yikes. We guess Jacob, like Tom, has a fear of eight-legged creepy-crawlies. “I’m terrified of spiders,” he told us. “I cannot deal with them at all, I will run away screaming.”

While it’s no secret that most superhero superstars embark on intense diet and exercise regimes before shooting commences, Tom declared that he “went on no such diet” and that he “ate whatever he wanted” in preparation for his role (some people have all the luck, and a miraculous metabolism).

But of course, he made up for it with regular trips to the gym that were “long enough to burn off the bad food”. “We started training every day but as filming went on, we became more and more tired, and we cut it down to about five days a week,” he said.

Before we wrapped up our chats with the actors, we posed one last question to each of them: what would you have done if you had Spider-Man’s powers at age 15?

Jacob believes he would have done what Peter Parker did. “Swinging about, having fun, trying to do the right thing and trying to be an Avenger,” he said.

Tom, on the other hand, was a lot more candid – and less virtuous – with his response. “I probably would have robbed a bank, if I’m being honest! I don’t know if I would have been as heroic,” he confessed, before changing his tune. “No, that’s silly; I probably would have been the best at sports and kept it a secret (that’s a lie).”

So which of Spidey’s many abilities does Tom want the most? “I think the most effective one would either be his super strength or spider sense,” he said, before teasing, “But there’s something about our version of the spider sense that you’ll have to watch the film to find out more about.”

We can hardly wait.

Spider-Man: Homecoming opens in cinemas on July 6.
