Living in constant limelight, having your words and actions picked apart and getting judged for your outfit choices seem to be part and parcel of the everyday celebrity life.

Being a famous personality is no walk in the park, and local actress Jayley Woo’s experience truly takes the cake. In an interview with Toggle while shooting Love at Cavenagh Bridge, Jayley revealed that she often receives unsolicited photos and videos of male genitals via Instagram.

According to her, that is the most extreme form of sexual harassment she has received since she started blogging in 2005.

“I would check my Instagram inbox while I eat and be appalled by what I was seeing,” recounted the actress, “Why do they (the different men who have sent her these pictures) have the courage to send me such explicit content?”

On top of that, the actress receives ‘social escort’ offers at least once a week over private messages on Instagram, all from different handlers who offered to pay her from as little as $500 to as much as S$1,000 per hour.

The situation got worse in recent years, after she became a Mediacorp actress and started appearing on TV.

“Am I giving people the impression that I want to be a social escort?” the actress wondered out loud. “I thought what I share (on Instagram) is relatively normal, because my fans always told me they feel encouraged by my positive posts.”

Despite the constant harassment, Jayley does not intend to take any action against the perpetrators because she believes that ignoring their messages is the best way to deal with them.

However, she will draw the line and make a police report if she encounters physical harassments, which, thankfully, has yet to happen to her.

The internet can be a dangerous place and the actress is more worried about her young fans, who frequent various social media user communities where these handlers ‘lurk’.

“I often warn JayleyBeans (official name for fans of Jayley) about the dangers of online predators, and tell them to block and report the handlers that I reveal on my Instagram,” Jayley said.

The actress, however, will stop at exposing their Instagram handles, as she does not intend to press charges.

“The whole world is on social media, which makes it hard to trace anyone on the internet,” Jayley said. She also believes that reporting the case might not help her, as she might get more of these messages from other people once it is made public.

The 26-year-old has confided in her parents about receiving unwanted sexual attention online, but her folks were surprisingly calm about the issue, simply laughing it off when they found out about it, revealed the actress.

We also asked if her identical twin and older sister, local actress Hayley Woo, is a victim to these messages, to which Jayley said yes.

However, she shared that Hayley, known for being the more reserved twin, probably gets them less frequently than she does.

The actress also affirmed that she would never think about becoming a social escort for the money, because she has grown to love herself and her body, and would rather spend time improving her acting chops.

She also urged everyone to do the same and respect their own bodies because “self-worth is priceless.”
