Bonia ambassadors Romeo Tan and Carrie Wong

Remember when we got Bonia ambassadors Carrie Wong and Romeo Tan to design their dream bags for us? Well, those whiteboard sketches have come to life, and were unveiled at a cosy showcase for the brand’s Too Cool For School-themed collection two weeks ago (so in a way… you saw them here on Toggle first?).

At the moment, only Carrie’s cute crossbody, which comes in a variety of colours and textures, is available for sale, while Romeo remains the only person in the world who owns his cool, duotone knapsack. Both actors seemed extremely pleased with their creations, which we learned are completely in line with their personal pack preferences during our chat before the event.

“I don’t like to bring a lot of things with me on casual outings, so this size is perfect for me,” shared Carrie, proudly showing off her eponymous mini satchel in a sweet mint shade. It’s a different story when she’s going to work, though, as she switches to a large tote that can hold her scripts, books, portable charger, and water bottle.

Romeo, on the other hand, admitted to being “very lazy”, so he’d rather just dump everything into one huge carrier. “You can usually find a full-size can of hairspray, hair wax, a makeup kit, scripts, a mini fan, water bottles, and sometimes clothes in my bag,” said the actor, rattling off his list of essentials with a grin. “I’m not sure how much it weighs, but according to Pan Lingling, it’s as heavy as her son’s field pack. (Laughs)”

What was Romeo’s style like in school?

While both artistes may be known for regularly sporting Best Dressed-worthy looks these days, it wasn’t always the case, especially for Romeo, who laughingly described his earlier dress sense as very “orbit” (or obiang, or unfashionable, for those who are scratching their heads over his use of Singlish).

“From Monday to Friday, you would see me in the same T-shirt, but in different colours,” he chuckled, recalling his time as a polytechnic student. It was apparently even worse when he was in secondary school. “I would layer a checkered shirt over a T-shirt with a complicated print, which looked very messy, but I didn’t find it weird at all. As a fat boy, I didn’t care much about my looks.”

What is Carrie’s biggest fashion regret?

Carrie remembered being very excited to get all dressed up when she first entered polytechnic, since she’d spent the last 10 years wearing a school uniform - but the enthusiasm was short-lived.

“After a few weeks, I started to feel like the lessons were too early, so I resorted to just grabbing the first thing I saw when I opened my wardrobe and wearing mostly T-shirts, shorts, and sometimes even slippers,” she said. “That’s what I was wearing when I was scouted [for Hey Gorgeous]! But luckily I wasn’t in slippers that day. (Laughs)”

However, her biggest fashion regret isn’t not trying hard enough, but trying too hard. “I’m still wondering why I did that, but I once wore denim shorts and knee-high boots to class. Gosh, it was so attention-seeking!” she said, cringing and chuckling at the memory. “When I stepped into the lecture hall, people were like [mimics judgemental stare]. No one said anything but you could see it in their eyes. I never wore those boots ever again.”

Do Carrie and Romeo think they’re cool now?

When we asked Carrie and Romeo if they honestly think of themselves as “cool” now, they confidently said yes. “I felt pretty cool when I was promoting All Is Well in Taiwan because I got to appear in top variety shows and stand beside popular celebrities like Show Lo,” gushed Romeo. “Getting to be on international TV is very cool.”

As for Carrie, she attributes her coolness to the fact that she is more self-assured and has a better understanding of what styles suit her better. “Compared to last time, I’m no longer as lost when it comes to fashion, and people tend to be more confident when they know what they want, which makes them cool,” she mused (and yes, she can rock those knee-high boots now).

Who do they think are the coolest local celebs?

But just how cool do they find each other?

“Oh, Carrie is cooool,” said Romeo, when we got him to rate his fellow ambassador’s coolness level on a scale of one to 10. “She’s so cool that she seldom talks. (Laughs) I think because she’s tall, she won half the battle, so I’d rate her an 8.5 out of 10.”

Carrie was slightly more generous with her appraisal of Romeo, bestowing him a 9 out of 10. “Romeo always gives off a vibe of being very ‘clean’ and well put-together, which will never go wrong,” she explained. “I think that’s very important for a guy.”

A score of 8.5 and 9 out of 10 is really good, but when it came to naming the coolest (a.k.a. deserving of a 10 out of 10) local celebs in their eyes, Romeo and Carrie picked Joanne Peh and Desmond Tan respectively.

“Joanne is bilingual, very intelligent, pretty, and carries herself very well,” said Romeo in praise of the Last Madame star. “I like her sense of humour too. Overall, she stands out to me.”

And it’s Desmond’s bold fashion choices that have scored points with Carrie. “In recent years, I really have to give it to Desmond because the way he dresses, whether it’s to events or casual outings, impresses me every single time,” she said. “He is daring and he has the vibe and charisma to pull it off, so if I had to name a local fashion icon, it would be him.”
