Local celebs’ dream Valentine’s Day dates

It’s that time of the year again, when the prices of bouquets, teddy bears and restaurant dishes soar to outrageous prices as couples scramble to flood their social media pages with showy - um, we mean sweet #ValentinesDay posts.

Bitter singleton remarks aside, we decided to take the chance in light of this special (or not?) occasion to ask several happily attached local stars - from those who have been dating for two years to those who have been married for almost three decades - what their plans are for this year’s commercialised day of outright lovey-doveyness. Read on for more.

How are you spending Valentine’s Day this year?
My wife’s birthday (Feb 13) and Valentine’s Day are only a day apart, so I was thinking of celebrating both occasions at the same time [Ed’s note: Jeremy told us in detail about the surprise he has planned for Jesseca, but we won’t reveal it in case she hasn’t received it yet].

What gifts are you intending to get for her?
I’m actually a very practical person. There was once I asked her, “If I buy you a microwave or vacuum cleaner, would you hit me?” She didn’t say anything but it was clear from her expression that the answer was yes. (laughs) Jokes aside, she’s someone who loves to read, and whenever she travels, she always carries lots of heavy books – that are as big as dictionaries! – with her, so I’m planning to buy a Kindle for her this year.

What’s your most memorable Valentine’s Day?
There isn’t one, only Christmas stands out to me. I’m not very romantic – the idea of fireworks and helicopter rides isn’t for me, just being able to celebrate Valentine’s Day together is good enough.

What's your dream Valentine’s Day date?
To travel overseas to a place with nice weather. As long as the both of us have each other, we don’t need to do anything special, it can be as simple as a walk in the park, admiring the flowers and enjoying the cool breeze. Right now my ideal countries are Portugal – I just came back from there so I really miss it – and Morocco, which looks beautiful.

How are you spending Valentine’s Day this year?
Over the years, my wife and I decided that we’re not going to buy into the whole commercial thing, so we kind of treat every day like Valentine’s Day. But to make it special, we might invite other couples to join us. After all, Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to just be about the love between husband and wife or boyfriend and girlfriend – it can also be between couples sharing the whole meaning of being in love together, which becomes more meaningful.

What’s the most unforgettable Valentine’s Day gift that you have ever received or been given?
I think handwritten cards and handmade stuff are still the best. I usually just collect old pictures and old interviews of Andrea, put them all together or make them into a portrait, frame it up and give it to her.

Besides your wife, who else would you like to spend Valentine’s Day with?
If I could choose someone from the past and bring that person back to life, it would be our Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. I would tell him how much I love him for bringing Singapore to where we are right now. I would do some research to find out what are his favourite things to eat and I will treat him to a good meal.

What's your dream Valentine’s Day date?
As my beloved dog just passed away last year, I would want all of us – me, Andrea and our three puppies – to have a walk by the beach and maybe just have a meal. All five of us eating our favourite meals together by the beach.

What’s your most memorable Valentine’s Day date?
I don’t even remember how we celebrated it last year. Every day feels like Valentine’s Day to me! (laughs) We definitely celebrate it lah, but it’s usually the unplanned celebrations on regular days that stand out to me.

What’s the most unforgettable Valentine’s Day gift that you have ever received or been given?
The most memorable present he’s ever gotten me was not for Valentine’s Day. On the first New Year’s Eve after we got together, he assembled a bouquet of 60 roses for me, and he removed the thorns from each of them one by one. I love handmade things so that left a deep impression on me.

What's your dream Valentine’s Day date?
I want him to surprise me with a trip to the zoo and book the "breakfast with orangutans" activity for us, which I’ve done for him before since he really loves animals. After that, we can just spend the whole day there and have a walk around, and then end the day with a cake to celebrate.

Besides your boyfriend, who else would you like to spend Valentine’s Day with?
I’d buy something for my mother, which I’ve never done before for Valentine’s Day. I would probably buy her flowers - she says it makes her feel awkward, but I think she secretly likes it - or even a puppy. Aiyah, I should probably take better care of my mum on Valentine’s Day because my father passed away when I was 18, so she hasn’t celebrated it since then.

How are you spending Valentine’s Day this year?
If I have the time, I hope I can decorate the house and prepare a nice meal for her at home (outside will probably be too crowded). I would prepare one of her favourite meals (either steak and potatoes or Shanghai-style borscht) and some dessert, but I have never cooked them before so I would need lots of practice first!

What’s the most unforgettable Valentine’s Day gift that you have ever received or been given?
We’ve only been a couple for two years. (laughs) And it’s usually her who gives me presents instead of the other way around. I think the best is when she makes something herself or remembers that I like something. For example, I once saw this music box that had Singapore buildings on it, which I thought had a lot of sentimental value. I bought one for someone else as a Christmas present and didn’t get one for myself, but she got one for me. I was very touched that she remembered that I liked it.

What's your dream Valentine’s Day date?
To go somewhere quiet and just have a meal and chit-chat. The simpler, the better.

Besides your girlfriend, who else would you like to spend Valentine’s Day with?
My mother. I’d give her flowers or a handbag. Once I saw Felicia give her mother a bag, and her mother was so happy! So I thought that a bag might make a great Valentine’s Day gift as well.

How are you spending Valentine’s Day this year?
We don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, but my team is putting together a Valentine’s Day special (for my YouTube channel) and they are arranging a surprise for Kate and I. For now, all I know is that we have to buy a gift worth S$5 for each other before heading to another location to complete the next mission.

What’s the most unforgettable Valentine’s Day gift that you have ever received or been given?
I can’t think of anything outstanding I’ve been given! As for what I’ve given to Kate, I usually pay attention to see if she says she wants or likes something, then I will do some research and buy the item for her. Most of the time I buy pink gadgets for her, because while she may not necessarily understand much about tech, she will like something as long as it’s pink! (Laughs)

Besides your wife, who else would you like to spend Valentine’s Day with?
My family. To be honest, there aren’t that many people within my inner circle. My life revolves around Kate and the kids, so no matter what I do, I will think of them.

What's your dream Valentine’s Day date?
I would wish for Valentine’s Day not to exist! (laughs) I really don’t understand why there is such an occasion. If two people are in love, they will be lovey-dovey all year round; and if they are not in love, they won’t suddenly become lovey-dovey on that day. We already celebrate our wedding anniversary, so there is no need to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

How are you spending Valentine’s Day this year?
I’ll be going back to Taiwan to visit my grandmother’s grave, and Andie and the kids will be going with me as well. I totally forgot about Valentine’s Day while making the flight arrangements as it is not in our habit to celebrate the occasion.

What’s the most unforgettable Valentine’s Day gift that you have ever received or been given?
I only remember something Andie gave me for my birthday when I was pregnant with Aden. I once saw a photo of a Japanese kid and his dog, which I found very cute. Andie then bought me an entire photo book of the child and the dog, along with a bag of money because before that, when he asked what I wanted for my birthday, I joked about wanting NT$30,000 (about S$1,350) in an envelope. (laughs)

As for the best present I’ve given Andie, it would be the kids! Avery was born on his birthday, so she’s probably the best birthday present ever.

What's your dream Valentine’s Day date?
One that is spent in a very cold country, so we can put our hands in each other’s pockets to keep warm - doesn’t that sound sweet? (laughs) There are hardly any chances to do this in Singapore.

How are you spending Valentine’s Day this year?
We should be celebrating it together with our families in Malaysia since we’ll be going back for Chinese New Year. I haven’t really thought about exactly what to do, perhaps we’ll leave the kids in the care of others and go out for a nice, romantic candlelight dinner.

What's your dream Valentine’s Day date?
One where the both of us dress to the nines - dress, tuxedo and all - and go out for dinner in a romantic restaurant. We’ve done it before, but we did not dress up.

Besides your wife, who else would you like to spend Valentine’s Day with?
My two other little “lovers” (daughters Nellie and Neia), of course! I will buy them loads of toys and clothes. Their happiness is the most important thing.

How are you spending Valentine’s Day this year?
We actually don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day – it’s our kids who celebrate it for us! They take the occasion very seriously, and will always buy gifts and do all sorts of things for us. Valentine’s Day doesn’t mean much to an old couple like Edmund and myself; we prefer to celebrate things like birthdays and our wedding anniversary.

What’s the most unforgettable Valentine’s Day gift that you have ever received or been given?
I usually buy practical items for Edmund, such as clothes. The most memorable gift from the kids was a remote control that I could use to “control” my husband with buttons such as “stand up” and “sit down”. That was quite funny and interesting.

What's your dream Valentine’s Day date?
I’ve never really thought about what my ideal Valentine’s Day date is like, but I feel that most women would appreciate a meaningful surprise.

Besides your husband, who else would you like to spend Valentine’s Day with?
My children (Chen Yi Xi and Chen Yi Xin). I’m a very practical person, so I would buy them things that they need, or financially support them in whatever they want to do. For instance, I will sponsor my daughter’s driving lessons, and for my son, he’s been having some teeth problems lately, so I will bring him to the dentist. (Lauughs)
