Virtually everyone in the Mediacorp wardrobe and imaging studio had trouble recognising Chantalle Ng yesterday: people gave her weird looks when she greeted them (one guy even asked out loud, “Who is that?”) and, uh, we walked right past her when we were looking for her (sorry).

Then again, we don’t think anyone can blame us: the 22-year-old’s brand new bangs (cut just that morning) and bold Cleopatra-like eyeliner are a far cry from the fresher-faced and forehead-baring look we’re used to seeing. And no, the newly crowned Best Newcomer isn’t going through a sudden emo or goth phase – the drastic makeover is for her role as the rebellious Coco in Toggle Originals series The Distance Between.

Appearances aside, Chantalle remarked during our interview that Coco’s personality is also a 180-degree switch from hers in real life. For instance, while having her photos taken at the imaging session, the starlet said that while she would usually flash a sweet smile, she had to put on a dour “act cool” expression in order to emulate her character properly.

“I’m actually a little worried about how I’m going to express my character’s personality,” she admitted. “The way she carries herself and talks to people is completely different from me, so I’ve been thinking hard about how I want to execute this role.”

That said, she is also looking forward to the challenge and has grown rather fond of her new image, especially since her mother, veteran actress Lin Meijiao, is digging it. “I sent a picture of myself to my mum and she responded with a shocked emoji,” she chuckled. “But she also said it’s a nice change, so as long as my mum likes it, all is good with me!”

Chantalle is worried about being homesick while filming overseas

Next month, the cast and crew of The Distance Between will head to Australia for a five-week filming trip in various parts of the country, such as the Gold Coast, Perth and Kangaroo Island. This will be Chantalle’s first time embarking on an overseas shoot, and while she was thrilled at first, the producer warned her that it won’t be all fun, games and glamorous #OOTD opportunities.

“At first I was excited about getting to dress up for winter, but then I thought, since sunrise is at 5am or 6am, I might have to start getting ready at 3am every day because my makeup is so heavy!” she said. “It might be difficult, but with Richie [Koh] and Shane [Pow] around, it should be fun as well.”

And there’s the small problem of Chantalle’s tendency to get homesick easily. “Since I’ll be away for five weeks, I’m worried I might miss my mum too much,” she said. “In the show, my character doesn’t want to go home but I think I will cry and be like, ‘I want to go home!’ I hope that won’t happen but you never know.”

To paint a picture of just how bad her homesickness can be, Chantalle recalled the two weeks she spent training in Shanghai with fellow second-gen stars Calvert Tay, Shalynn Tsai and Marcus Guo. “I was the oldest so I should’ve been the one taking care of them, but I was the first to cry! (laughs) I called my mum and was like ‘[Sobbing] I’m so tired, do you want to come and find me?’ It was hard.”

But this time, she vows to toughen up and even issued a public request for her mother to not make any surprise trips to visit her Down Under. “Even though she’s my mum, she’s still an industry senior, and I would feel very stressed out if any seniors came to see me on set,” Chantalle explained.

However, judging from Meijiao’s reported response to her daughter being away from home for an extended period of time, we don’t think Chantalle has to worry about that.

“She will be glad [that I’m gone]!” she wailed. “I asked her if she will miss me and she was like, ‘What? It’s a load off my shoulders!’ I believe in her heart she will miss me, but even her friends told me they think she will be happy while I’m away…”

Don’t worry, Chantalle, we’re sure your mum will still pine for your presence at home. After all, as you put it, “How could she not? I’m her precious baby!”

Richie Koh can't wait to have fun in Australia

While Chantalle has her minor reservations about tackling her first drama project outside Singapore, her co-star Richie Koh is counting down the days to his very first trip to Australia.

“I’m not nervous at all,” the 24-year-old declared. “I personally feel that filming will go very smoothly, and the ideal scenario would be for us to wrap earlier so we can have a few extra days to have fun.”

Part of his to-do list is to check out the gorgeous scenery he’s only ever seen on television and to admire the local population – kangaroos, that is. “Maybe I’ll even bring one home to keep as a pet,” he quipped, to which we warned him that he would most certainly get stopped at customs.

When asked how he feels about sharing the screen with Chantalle, to whom he lost the Best Newcomer title to last week, he replied, “We’ve never worked together before but she’s very likeable so I’m looking forward to it. Regardless of who won or not, we’re both newcomers and we have lots to learn from each other.”

Someone in the studio pointed out that Chantalle's current look makes her look like a young A-Mei. Do you see the resemblance?

Don't be fooled by this cheeky pose - Richie told us that he's actually more afraid of the heat, so he should feel right at home in the 12-16 degree weather Down Under!

In the show, Richie plays a rebellious son from a rich family, hence all the arrogant-looking poses he flashed for our camera.
