Actors Li Nanxing and Elvin Ng were back at the Home Team Academy yesterday for a weapon training session to prepare for their return as ASP Wei Lantian and SSSGT Zhang Guixiang in the new season of C.L.I.F. 4. The two seasoned “officers” were joined by Zhang Yaodong (Chen Yu), Ya Hui (Wang Shishi) and Mei Xin (Cai Yanqi), who are the latest additions to the series and police force in the drama; co-star Rui En, who will be reprising her role as INSP Huang Zhijie, was absent as she was unwell.

This season, Elvin, who played a traffic police officer in C.L.I.F. 3, will be returning to his neighbourhood police posting and will take his relationship with Weng Xuemei (Sora Ma) one step further as marriage is on the cards for the couple. With the exit of Qi Yuwu and Joanne Peh’s characters, the drama’s other anchor couple Lantian and Zhijie will welcome a new member to their family but that doesn’t mean Zhijie will sit out of all the crime-busting action as the pair will continue to head their respective teams in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Phew!

Before filming begins in the third week of March, we caught up with the actors after their crash course on the how-tos and do-nots of handling a revolver and before they trooped off for a live-firing session. We find out who’s the true marksman (or woman) of the team and the actors share how they are starting to prepare for their new roles as men and women in blue. Read on for more!

He will bid the bulky TP (traffic police) uniform, helmet and scooter sayonara this season, but will welcome a new burden (in the form of 6 kg of weaponry load) and a new ride (the bicycle) with his return to the neighbourhood police centre. The actor tells us his character is less of a slacker in C.L.I.F. 4 and will be more “proactive” at work. “But if you ask me, I still prefer playing a lazy and apathetic Guixiang,” he chuckled in jest.

A little more experienced than his peers when it comes to handling a gun, having attended a training session two years ago, Elvin remarked that there was a slight improvement in his marksmanship at the firing range. “Previously my shots were all outside the perimeter of the body, so this is a much better attempt!”

Not bad, but the true marksmen of the team are…

Ya Hui and Mei Xin surprise everyone with their sharpshooting

The two belles of the drama, who play onscreen BFFs and subsequently love rivals, may have had difficulties and struggled with their dummy revolvers during the classroom session, but the duo morphed into sharp shooters at the firing range and trumped the boys hands down with their deadly accuracy.

“Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,” Mei Xin warned with a knowing glint in her eye. Point taken.

The ecstatic actress turned into a mini fangirl when she shared about how Mediacorp Ah Ge left her star struck when she saw him at one of the previous Star Awards ceremony. “He’s so charming and good looking and I was absolutely floored when I saw him in real life,” she gushed in embarrassment. However, it’s not known if she will have the chance to act alongside him in C.L.I.F. as bulk of her newscaster character’s (she is a volunteer police officer) scenes will be opposite Ya Hui and Yaodong.

While it’s not known yet if there will be plenty of running, chasing and fighting in store for our favourite men and women in blue this season, the actress plans to return to the ring to build up her physical stamina and improve on her fighting stances for her role as a friendly neighbourhood police officer. “I think it’s important to look and feel like a police officer, I’m afraid I might come across as too weak and frail!” she admitted.

Yao Dong is the sole actor who was trained to handle two different weapons – the revolver and the pistol – yesterday as his character will be transferred from one division to another (Airport Police division to CID) during the drama’s run. His character’s complicated background and love life (with Ya Hui and Mei Xin’s characters) serves as the overarching story plot in C.L.I.F. 4.

No newbie to the firing range and weapon training session, Ah Ge Nanxing joked about two shots that were fired right above the target: "I intended it to be there so that this piece of paper target can be hung up easily (laughs)"
