DIRECT FROM PERTH: Back in March, we packed our bags and hopped on a plane to Perth to join the crew and four cast members of Channel 8’s upcoming blockbuster drama The Dream Job. Filming took place for about ten days in the Western Australian region, and scenes from the overseas shoot will be featured in four out of the 30 episodes.

While we were there, we grilled each of the artistes on their various “dreams”: what amenities will their dream house have? What do the single ones look for in their dream partner? Have they managed to achieve a childhood dream of theirs?

On the second day of filming, the set was visited by a young girl carrying a bouquet of flowers and a box of donuts. Upon seeing her, Rebecca Lim immediately thought, “Okay, that’s Jeanette (Aw)’s fan.” However, the fan made a beeline towards Becks instead, leaving her stunned.

“I didn’t expect her to be looking for me!” the 29-year-old recounted during our interview at the idyllic Millbrook Winery vineyards, between trying to sidestep kangaroo poop and battling the occasional strong wind. “And she came with sunflowers and lilies, both my favourite flowers, which was a very sweet gesture.” She learned that the fan was a Malaysian living in Australia, and she had found out about the shooting of The Dream Job via Channel 8’s social media postings.

When we followed the cast and crew to Twilight Hawkers Market, we witnessed quite a number of Asian folks going up to Rebecca and asking for a picture with her, which she gladly obliged. “I paid them to do it!” she joked, before turning serious. “It’s very heartening to know that (Singaporeans) in Australia do miss our local productions, and that they find ways and means to watch the shows online.”

Those weren’t the only sweet parts about Rebecca’s trip down under, which is the furthest she has ever travelled for work. “I saw a lot of my friends and colleagues posting about the heat wave (back in Singapore), so I’m grateful that I’m here during this period of time, because at least I get 10 days of cool breeze,” she grinned, adding, “The food’s been great – the servings are humongous but also super yummy – and it’s just a very peaceful, conducive and beautiful environment, which I like a lot.”

Unlike co-stars Shaun Chen and Zhang Zhen Huan, Rebecca was much more productive in the area of shopping. After wrapping up her scenes extra early on the second day, she spent two fruitful hours in a supermarket, where she bought so many things she quipped about needing an extra luggage bag.

“My sister studied in Australia and misses a lot of food that’s only available here, so she gave me a whole shopping list!” she explained. “I also have a huge family and lots of friends, so I got plenty of titbits for everyone. I still hope to buy a bottle of wine, and I could always do with more chocolate, honey and nuts, but other than that I think I’ve pretty much gotten what I wanted to get.”

Toggle: Do you have any recurring dreams?
Rebecca: Interestingly, as I got older I couldn’t remember my dreams, but I can vividly remember what dreams I had when I was much younger. I would dream I’m going to the toilet to pee, and…pee on my bed. (laughs) But that was when I was really, really young, FYI (for your information)!

What is your dream house like?
First of all, it’s really clean, because I’m quite a messy person, and I will have all the people that I love with me, because if I’m alone it’ll just be a house and not a home. I hope it will be the warmest home that anybody can find. Physically-speaking, it doesn’t have to be huge, and it will be very windy as well.

What dream car will you drive?
Wow, can I have like, a lot of cars? I can’t choose one! (laughs) I would like to have many, many cars to suit the many moods, occasions and outfits that I have, so I can match my #OOTD (outfit of the day) to my car. #COTD!

What will your dream wardrobe have?
It will be full of the most beautiful pieces, leather jackets, gorgeous couture gowns (even though I don’t know when I’ll get to wear them), lots of shoes, lots of bags, and a huge mirror for me to be vain in front of. (laughs) I think I would never be able to afford my dream wardrobe!

Describe your dream man.
(Someone who is) pleasant-looking, and can carry himself well; when he enters a room, all eyes are on him, and I wouldn’t mind if other people look at my man because I’ll be like, “Yeah, that’s my man!” For personality, someone who can make me laugh, whether on an everyday basis or when I’m sad, I think that’s very important. Someone like my dad, maybe?

What’s your dream vacation like?
A really, really long one, maybe like, half a year (spent) around the world covering places in Asia, the U.S. (I haven’t been to the U.S.) and Europe (Italy, Greece, and I would love to go to Paris again). Somewhere with really good food is also a must.

Who are your dream co-stars?
I would love to meet Gong Li, I think she’s really beautiful, like a piece of art. Locally, I would love to have a show where me, Aileen Tan, Zoe Tay, Chen Han Wei, Ian Fang, Romeo Tan and a few others whom I get along with play one big crazy family. I think there’d be good chemistry.

What is your dream role?
One where I get to travel around the world. I’d film three episodes in Venice, three episodes in Vietnam, and another three in New York, something like that. I’ve also been playing pretty good characters for a long time now, so I would enjoy playing someone bad like a psychopath.

Did you have any childhood dreams and have you managed to achieve them?
Actually, the life that I’m living now is totally not what I expected it to be when I was growing up. It was never my childhood ambition to be actress, but to be a doctor, so things have been really different but also really good so far.

How do you picture your dream retirement life?
[Ed’s note: She playfully rolled her eyes at us. Sorry, Becks, but we didn’t do this on purpose!] Firstly, I hope to be in the pink of health and be able to do things by myself. (Where I retire to) doesn’t matter, it depends on where my family or, if I’m married, my husband is.

Describe your dream life.
Getting up at any time I wish, having a nice breakfast to start the day, working for a few hours, then having some wine and cheese. (laughs) A worry-free life, not only for myself but also for the people I love, would also be great.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you think you’re living your dream life?
At the moment, five? I’m very happy with life at the moment but I don’t wish that this is the best. I want to have more, not just in terms of material (possessions) but also spiritual – I want to have more wisdom, to see and achieve more things. Life is great right now, my career is great, everybody is great, but if everything can get better I think that would be excellent.
