DIRECT FROM PERTH: Back in March, we packed our bags and hopped on a plane to Perth to join the crew and four cast members of Channel 8’s upcoming blockbuster drama The Dream Job. Filming took place for about ten days in the Western Australian region, and scenes from the overseas shoot will be featured in four out of the 30 episodes.

While we were there, we grilled each of the artistes on their various “dreams”: what amenities will their dream house have? What do the single ones look for in their dream partner? Have they managed to achieve a childhood dream of theirs?

For recent Star Awards Best Supporting Actor victor Zhang Zhen Huan, the trip was a special one because not only was it his first time filming a show so far away from home, but it was also his first time in Australia.

“It’s wonderful,” he gushed during our interview at the picturesque Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour. “I’ve filmed in Malaysia before so working overseas is not an entirely new experience for me, but here in Australia it’s a very different feeling – the people, the environment, the weather, the food, the wine. Like right now, it’s sunny and I’m wearing two layers of clothing but I’m not sweating, which is something that would never happen in Singapore or Malaysia.”

In fact, the duke was having such a ball that he did not even mind the ridiculously early daily call times. “I can’t imagine getting out of bed at 4am or 5am every day in Singapore, but here I wake up with a feeling of anticipation, which makes it easier,” he explained.

The 32-year-old Sichuan native also took advantage of the visit down under to stock up on two huge bottles of omega-3 fish oil supplements, which are much cheaper than in Singapore. When asked if he would make a good travel buddy, he replied, “I don’t really know how to do trip research or plan an itinerary, but I’m good for carrying heavy things!”

Toggle: Describe your dream house.
Zhen Huan: It sits on a cliff, and has a room with my bed facing a view of the sea.

What dream car will you drive?
Actually, I’m not very particular about cars. I know a lot of people like sports cars, but I find them a bit too small for me. I prefer four-wheel drives.

What would your dream wardrobe look like?
Very big, with all my clothes neatly hung up. My current closet is too small for all my clothes. I have a maid who hangs them up but when I’m looking for a particular piece that I want to wear, I end up making a mess. The best would be to have a walk-in closet, where I can just enter and easily find whatever I want to wear.

I would also like to own more jackets, although I won’t have much chance to wear them in Singapore. I like fashionable pieces for cold weather that you can layer, such as the ones in (Korean drama) Winter Sonata. [Bursts into the show’s theme song]

Describe your dream woman.
She is someone who really loves me, takes care of me, and can accommodate (to my schedule). She must also be able to listen to my nonsense, because sometimes I have too many things to say.

Appearance-wise, I like girls with long hair, large eyes and who aren’t too tall, maybe around my mum’s height. [We ask if he’s indirectly looking for someone like his mother] Maybe! Because I’ve been all by myself in Singapore for too long already, so I think my dream woman is someone who can give me the feeling of being “home”. [Has he met anyone like that?] Not yet. Do you have anyone to introduce to me? (laughs)

Please “promote” yourself to potential partners.
I think I’m a considerate person. I can be funny, romantic, plus I’m down-to-earth. I have broad shoulders and strong arms that you can feel safe in. (Flexes) I’m honest, I’m good…(Embarrassed laugh) I can’t go on!

What would you do on your dream vacation?
I would go to a quiet place with my dream woman. A vacation, to me, should be different from my everyday life in Singapore. I used to think I liked the seaside, but after coming to Perth, I realised I would enjoy staying in a cabin in the forest as well.

How do you picture your dream retirement life?
(Living in) a comfortable, small house by the sea with my dream woman, a dog, and a cat.

Did you have any childhood dreams and have you managed to achieve them?
No. I had no time to think about dreams because I was too busy studying. It was only after coming to Singapore that I realised acting is my dream.

Who are your dream co-stars?
I’ve been watching a lot of period dramas lately, so maybe (Chinese actor) Hu Ge? It usually changes depending on what shows I’m watching at the moment.

What is a dream role that you’ve never taken on before?
I’ve never acted in a period drama before, so I think it would be very interesting to try that out.

What is your dream life?
One where I work a day, then rest a day. I can’t keep being on holiday, but I can’t be constantly working either.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you think you’re living your dream life?
Overall, 6? Although a lot of things aren’t perfect, I’m able to open my eyes every morning feeling happy and looking forward to a new day. I think (happiness) is an attitude.
