Voluntary welfare organisation Sian Chay Medical Institution pulled out all the stops for its very first televised fundraising programme last night (Jul 7), which concluded with a staggering S$8,460,426 in donations - well above the goal of S$5 million.

For three hours, the inaugural Sian Chay Bonding With Love Charity Show kept audiences in Mediacorp’s MES Theatre - and those at home tuned into the Channel 8 live broadcast - entertained with a wide variety of acts both classic and unconventional.

The evening began with a presentation of a rearranged version of Sian Chay’s theme song by Zoe Tay, Chen Hanwei, Desmond Tan, Lee Wei Song, Lee Si Song, Jay Lim, and a large group of young students. They then made way for Vincent Ng and a troupe of wushu students and dancers, who wowed with their graceful yet powerful combination of martial arts and dance.

After Nathan Hartono’s soothing rendition of two English and Chinese tracks, Bollywood took centre stage as Mei Xin, Denise Camillia Tan, Fang Rong, and Jasmine Sim showed off their belly dancing skills, dressed in colourful custom-made costumes.

Taiwanese singers Anna Lin and Daniel Lo slowed things down with several Hokkien and Mandarin numbers, before a barbershop quartet-like group comprising Joanna Dong, Sebastian Tan, Jimmy Ye, and Hong Shao Xuan got the crowd grooving along to their eight-song medley. Rahimah Rahim then kept the energy going by getting everyone to sing along to ‘Burung Kakak Tua’, and later impressed everyone with her performance of Mandarin song ‘Wang Zhaojun’.

Following Taiwanese singer Hsiao Huang Chi’s set, a 95-year-old calligrapher joined Japanese-Taiwanese songstress Judy Ongg on stage to write Sian Chay’s Chinese name on a giant banner as she sang. The banner was then revealed to be a gift for President Halimah Yacob, a Patron of Sian Chay Medical Institution, who was present at the show.

Last but not least, veteran actors Richard Low, Mark Lee, Marcus Chin, Henry Thia, Zhu Houren, and Henry Heng unleashed their inner hip-hop stars to rap in Hokkien, while Fish Leong wrapped things up with a few ballads and back-up dancers wearing dresses fashioned out of balloons.

Even those who did not perform, such as Romeo Tan and Priscelia Chan, got to do their part by conducting video interviews with several beneficiaries that were shown throughout the event, highlighting how Sian Chay Medical Medical Institution has helped them through their plights. Mandopop megastars JJ Lin and Stefanie Sun recorded short clips of themselves encouraging viewers to donate generously as well.
