Twelve years after beginning his showbiz journey as a contestant on talent search reality programme Project SuperStar and nine years after making his acting debut in Channel 8’s Table of Glory, Jeremy Chan finally secured the very first accolade of his career at last night’s inaugural Asian Academy Creative Awards (AAA).

The 37-year-old actor-host was honoured with Best Comedy Performance for his role as a gangster-turned-property agent in Toggle Originals series My Agent is a Hero, edging out other prominent hopefuls including Filipino comedian Michael V. and Thai heartthrob Mario Maurer. In his acceptance speech, his thank you list included Toggle (you’re welcome!), his wife Jesseca Liu (of course), as well as his boss and mentor Mark Lee.

“Many years ago when I was just starting out, I told [Mark] that I will keep working hard until the day I win an award so I can thank him on stage,” he shared when we grabbed him for a quick chat outside the Capitol Theatre just minutes after his victory. “It took a long time for me to fulfil my promise, but I finally did it!”

When we asked if his missus had any words of encouragement for him before the event, he said that she told him to “stay calm” and not stress himself out as this is his first nomination. “To be honest, I was so nervous that I couldn’t sleep last night!” he chuckled, admitting that he was actually shaking and on the verge of tears on stage (not that we could tell at all).

(Continued on next slide: Where will Jeremy display his new trophy?)

Fortunately, his anxiousness eventually made way for a jubilant mood, with Jeremy telling us that he was raring to rush home to have a meal with Jesseca. “I scored a goddess in my personal life [when I got married], and now, I’ve gained a goddess in my professional life!” he grinned, referring to the “Goddess of Creativity”-shaped trophy.

As such, the location of where his shiny new prize will be displayed will be entirely up to Mrs. Chan because, “There cannot be two women in the house! (Laughs)”

We don’t think Jesseca will have any qualms whatsoever about the new addition. Not long after the ceremony ended, she posted a picture of her husband receiving his award on stage and wrote, “The best Christmas present! I am the proudest wife!”

Now that his first award is in the bag, what else does Jeremy hope to tick off the bucket list? “I think it’s natural to have a certain pressure to top your current achievement - after all, humans are never satisfied,” he mused, before adding with a smile, “For myself, I would love to win Best Actor in the future, but that’s something I will worry about another day.”

The final round of the AAA, which replaces the Asian Television Awards as a key event in the Singapore Media Festival calendar, was spread out over two nights (Dec 6 and Dec 7) and gave out a total of 47 trophies to recipients from across the region. Each national contender was shortlisted by judges from their respective countries before going on to compete against other countries in the final round.

For the national round in Singapore, Mediacorp claimed 29 out of the 47 categories with programmes that were aired on Toggle, Channel 5, Suria, Channel NewsAsia, okto, Vasantham and Channel U. Besides Jeremy, four other representatives also went on to be crowned the ultimate victors: M. Raihan Halim (Best Original Screenplay for Suria’s SR115), Channel 5’s We are Singaporeans: Global Edition (Best Game or Quiz Programme), Douglas Lan (Best Direction [Non-fiction] for Channel NewsAsia’s National Service - The Beginning), and okto Sports’ One: Unstoppable Dreams (Best Entertainment [one-off/annual).

Quan Yifong was up for Best Entertainment Presenter/Host (for Channel U's Unique Lodging) but ultimately walked away empty-handed. She left halfway through the ceremony as she reportedly wasn’t feeling well. Feel better soon, Yifong jie!
