Local actress Julie Tan has been having a ball of a time in New York. The 23-year-old headed to the city late last month to undertake an acting course at the New York Film Academy, and she has been loving every single moment of her life so far.

We sat down with the busy student for a phone interview in the afternoon last week, as she had shared earlier that she was only free at that time (close to midnight in New York).

It turns out that lessons at the academy only start in the afternoon, and usually ends at night. With lessons every day from Monday to Friday, Julie shared that she has been able to learn more about directing, auditioning, and of course, acting in her short one month there.

The actress is also making use of her time abroad to take a breather from everything in Singapore, and shared that so far, she has only kept in contact with fellow actors Shane Pow and Desmond Tan. She was also spotted having lunch with 987FM DJs Gerald Koh and Joakim Gomez this week, when they visited the Big Apple for the Suicide Squad press junket.

The actress has also fallen prey to the lure of the smartphone app that’s taking everyone by storm, ‘Pokemon GO’.

“I’m crazy about the game right now, I’ll play it whenever I’m on the train or walking. School is pretty stressful, so I rely on it to help me destress,” she laughed.

Julie also shared that she’s actually met a number of guys while playing the game. Once they see that she’s playing as well, they’ll approach her and try to chat her up, she revealed.

“They’ll ask about my gameplay, and ask if I want to go out with them,” she shared. “But I’ve always said no.”

The actress recently ended a six month relationship with a mystery man who’s 11 years older than her. However, when asked if she’s actively looking for a relationship whilst overseas, Julie expressed that she’d wish to keep her New York experience ‘to herself’.

Out of all the pictures she provided Toggle, over half of them consisted of the delicacies she has tried so far.

America is known for their super-sized food portions and sinful eats, but Julie does not fear gaining weight at all.

“I’ve been exercising regularly,” she laughed. “Anyway, America is not as image-conscious, [the people here] don’t care about your weight or height. They wouldn’t look at you through rose-tinted glasses.”

However, her original plan to stay in New York for six months has been cut short. As she has taken up a role in Dick Lee’s upcoming movie, Wonder Boy, she will need to return to Singapore in October to film the movie.

Julie revealed that she had finally accepted her manager’s suggestion after much deliberation.

“I can [come back] to take up another course whenever I have time, but this opportunity to act in a movie does not come often. I’m still under contract with Mediacorp at the moment, so I must take the bigger picture into consideration as well.”

Of crime, homelessness and street-smarts

After a month in New York, Julie is still getting used to seeing homeless people at almost every street corner, as well as the risk of a potential shooting.

While it was a pretty big shock for Julie, she gradually got used to them, from the endless sirens of the police cars and ambulances, to the sheer amount of homeless people.

However, she feels that donating money to these homeless people will not help their case at all.

“All of them are able-bodied, so why aren’t they looking for jobs? I feel that it’s not hard for someone to rebuild their lives, it all depends on whether you wish to do so.”

As a solo female traveller, Julie makes it a point to update her family on her whereabouts and daily life. She is also more aware of her surroundings, and makes a conscious effort to avoid places with a lot of tourists, for fear of pickpockets.

The 23-year-old’s schoolmates have also given her some advice to help her become more ‘street-smart’.

“I’ve gotten to know people from various countries like Germany and Turkey, and their stories of what they’ve been through have impacted me greatly,” she shared.
