Local celebs and their Korean doppelgangers

Have you ever been told you look like a celebrity? Well, local artistes get that as well, and while their supposed likenesses to some of the Hallyu wave’s biggest, brightest and most beautiful stars may not be comparable to the downright – and deceitful – identicalness of Christopher Lee’s characters in Channel 8’s recently concluded Doppelganger, they’ve been enough to inspire comments from the public pointing out the similarities.

Read on for more!

Disclaimer: The following comparisons are based on public comments found on the artistes’ social media posts and do not reflect the views of Toggle. Plus, this is all just in good fun!

Jeffrey Xu

Said to look like: EXO’s Lay

We remember reading comments about the striking resemblance between Felicia Chin’s beau and a fellow China-born star (who found fame in the Hallyu wave) for years now, but the remarks of the kind have far from died down.

In fact, during one of his recent trips to Shanghai, a couple approached Jeffrey for a picture at a restaurant mistaking him for Lay. “I was a bit more dressed up than usual that day so I probably looked like a K-pop star,” he told us with a laugh. “When I said I’m not Zhang Yixing (Lay’s real name), they were shocked and asked me if I’m related to him!”

Of course, the 29-year-old is more than happy about the comparison (and not just because he believes it helped increase his number of followers). “I admire him because he works very hard, is a very talented dancer and is very respectful,” he said. “I’ve also become a fan of his.”

Apparently, Jeffrey has also been told that he looks like Good Doctor star Joo Won. “He came to Singapore a few years ago and a Mediacorp producer pointed out our resemblance,” he said.

Aloysius Pang

Said to look like: BTS’s Jungkook

This sensual shot of Aloy spurred a flurry of comments gushing over his likeness with a fellow doe-eyed star, namely the maknae (youngest member) of K-pop super-group BTS (perhaps they share some similarities in their – ahem – “DNA”?).

“This isn’t the first time I’ve received such comments, actually – there are certain angles of myself that fans seem to think look like Jungkook,” he said. “Honestly, I don’t see it. It’s a really big compliment, but I think we’re two very different people who just don’t look alike, even when I have all that makeup on.”

When Aloysius was younger, he remembers being told a lot that he looks like “the boy from I Not Stupid”, Shawn Lee. “That’s the one I think I look the most alike, but now that we’ve grown up, I don’t think we look similar anymore.”

He added that Bonnie Loo and Ian Fang have sent him photos of Japanese and Korean celebrities saying he looks like them, but he can’t remember who they are.

Desmond Tan

Said to look like: Gong Yoo, Jung Woo Sung

This year’s Star Awards Best Actor is at least two oppas in one, having been compared to Hallyu hunks Gong Yoo and Jung Woo Sung.

“I’m flattered to have people commenting about my similarity to these two Korean superstars, especially Jung Woo Sung, who is my favourite Korean actor,” he gushed. “Although I don’t see the resemblance myself, I’m certainly pleased to know that people think so!”

The 31-year-old has been more frequently compared to another veteran thespian. “Almost every cameraman I’ve worked with told me that I have a resemblance with Tony Leung, and sometimes, I do agree we look alike from some angles,” he said.

“He’s my number one favourite actor of all time, and I’ve probably watched every one of his shows. Maybe I’ve grown to look like him, or my performances are influenced by him? I have no idea, but I do know that my dream is to work with him one day!”

So what are this thoughts on this comparison? “I’m always very flattered or even secretly enjoy it when people mention that I look like my idol! (laughs)” Can’t say we blame him.

Carrie Wong

Said to look like: IU

Not only does Carrie get a lot of people telling her that she looks like she hails from the Land of the Morning Calm (“I think it’s because of my style of makeup?”), quite a number – including her Korean teacher – have pointed out the resemblance between her and the doe-eyed songbird, who happens to be her favourite singer.

Needless to say, Carrie is beyond flattered by such statements. “Although I personally don’t see the resemblance, I’m still very happy to hear it and I will gladly accept the compliment,” she said with a grin.

Shane Pow

Said to look like: EXO’s D.O.

Shane admitted that when he first heard of the comparison between him and the soulful-voiced EXO singer, he “had no idea who he was”, but once more comments of that sort started coming his way, he Googled him and concluded, “I think we look similar from certain angles, but overall I think still okay only lah. He’s a big star so to be compared to him is good thing! (laughs)”

However, the person Shane said he gets compared to even more is Edwin (and vice versa) – even some veteran artistes have them confused at times.

“Sometimes when his show is on air and I go out to buy food or something, aunties and uncles will tell me that they saw me on TV last night,” he chuckled. “Edwin and I have discussed this before and he said that he gets that too! If we played brothers it would be very convincing.” Casting directors, you know what to do.

Ian told us he is “happy” (and even thankful) that people – or at least, this momentarily confused commenter pictured above – think he looks like the popular EXO main vocalist before quipping, “If I were more famous, they would say he looks like me instead. (laughs)”

Calvert Tay

Said to look like: Lee Min Ho

According to local Chinese papers, Calvert’s manager, celeb hairstylist Addy Lee, once sent his photo to a TV producer in China, who commented that the 18-year-old looks like Hallyu heartthrob Lee Min Ho.

Even his own sister Tay Ying sees it. “We were having dinner at home one night and a Lee Min Ho drama was playing,” he recounted to us. “My sister suddenly stopped eating, looked between the TV and me, and said, ‘You guys look alike leh!’” (That’s quite a big deal, coming from a sibling.)

No one is more thrilled by the compliment than Calvert himself, who told us that Min Ho is one of his idols.

We found another comment on a different post of Calvert’s saying he looks like Kai, the chiselled main dancer of EXO, and he told us that when he has long bangs covering his forehead, some folks have told him that he reminds them of GOT7’s Yugyeom.

Chantalle Ng

Said to look like: Kim So Hyun

The newly crowned Star Awards Best Newcomer (and veteran actress Lin Mei Jiao’s daughter) humbly shared that she doesn’t think she’s as pretty as the former child actress she’s told she resembles, but is flattered by the comparison nonetheless, especially since she watches and enjoys her dramas.  “If we were Pokémon characters, she would be the more evolved version of me,” Chantalle told us with a chuckle.

The remarks about their similarities in looks aren’t just found on social media – Chantalle reported that many folks within Mediacorp have come up to her saying that the young actresses look alike.

Shalynn Tsai

Said to look like: Yoon Bora

Apparently, that lone comment we spotted on Chen Xiuhuan’s daughter’s photo isn’t the only time she was told of the resemblance between her and the former SISTAR member.

“Actually, I get comments like these quite often – usually from people I’m not so close with, like acquaintances or even strangers upon our first meetings! (laughs)” the violinist-actress told us. “I used to follow K-pop a few years back so I know who these celebs are, and I was pretty flattered because they’re stunning, incredibly talented and hard-working.”

Shalynn added on that she’s also been told that she looks like Krystal Jung and has “Ouyang Nana vibes”. Although she isn’t quite sure what they mean about the latter (perhaps it’s because they’re both young, pretty musicians?), she still takes it as a huge compliment – who wouldn’t? – because she really looks up to “diligent, resilient women who work hard for their own futures”.

Zhang Zhen Huan

Said to look like: Lee Min Ho

It looks like Calvert’s not the only Lee Min Ho lookalike in town – Zhen Huan’s received the same comment too, including one from Ian Fang. “This is the first time I’m hearing of this, perhaps it’s because we had similar hairstyles once,” he theorised modestly.

Zong Zijie

Said to look like: Wanna One's Park Jihoon

Most folks who keep up with Korean news would probably have an impression of two of Jihoon’s viral moments: when he winked at the end of a performance on Produce 101, and when he popularised the phrase and gesture for “I’ll save you in my heart” (aka “jeojang”, which must be uttered with as much aegyo as possible).

“It’s quite flattering but to be honest, I don’t see a very big resemblance,” said Zijie, when we showed him a comment on one of his Instagram pictures comparing him to the Wanna One star. Someone please get him to the do the “jeojang” pose.

Catch Zijie on Toggle Originals series @StarCrossed. New episodes premiere every Thursday and Friday.

Zijie’s other “twins” are much closer to home, specifically, in the same company: his boss, NoonTalk founder Dasmond Koh, and label mates Aloysius Pang and Xu Bin.

“When I was shooting with Ah Jie Zoe Tay, she kept saying I look exactly like Dasmond when he was younger!” he shared, adding rather self-deprecatingly, “I guess I have a very common face, and I’m quite used to it.” At least it’s also a very good-looking face?

Tosh Zhang

Said to look like: Zion T.

While most folks would probably be flattered to be compared to a famous star, the actor, rapper and Ah Boy didn’t take too well to being repeatedly reminded of his resemblance to the R&B crooner. “Getting annoyed with people saying I look like Zion T. He’s more famous so I look like him? Get the f*** outta (sic) here. I’m me. Nobody else.” Yikes.

If it makes Tosh feel any better, we only think they look slightly alike when they’re both wearing sunglasses.

“Found my doppelgänger! I always knew I had the makings of a Kpop star,” wrote the multi-hyphenate next to a collage of her and Jimin of girl group AOA, where she’s emulating the same pose and seductive, mouth-half-open gaze of her long-lost Hallyu twin.

We don’t know about you, but we would be very pleased if we were told we look like a good-looking person 14 years younger than us (yes, that’s the age gap between Michelle and Jimin).

Said to look like: Jung Hae In

Jeremy was just going about his own business one day when he suddenly received a message from his stylist friend, which contained the above collage of him and actor Jung Hae In (aka the super cute police officer from While You Were Sleeping) pictured side by side and a comment that they look alike.

“He [Hae In] is quite cute, but I don’t see the resemblance – look at his complexion, he is so much better looking than me!” Jeremy dismissed.
