Singapore represent! Kit Chan, Nathan Hartono and Ling Kai

After years of sending local reps to partake in The Voice of China (now known as Sing! China due to legal issues), a popular reality singing TV competition that welcomes contestants from different parts of Asia to come under the tutelage of its four judges, Jay Chou, Na Ying, Wang Feng and Harlem Yu, we finally saw a Singaporean singer a.k.a Nathan Hartono successfully rising against the odds (and beating hundreds of hopeful contestants) to land a coveted spot in the show's grand finals tonight, after coming out tops with a score of 93.65 at the semi-finals last week.

Whether or not he wins and brings home victory for Singapore tonight, Nathan's already a winner in most Singaporeans' hearts, having come this far in the competition and for going where no Singaporean has gone before.

Check out other local talents who have represented Singapore in overseas reality singing TV shows in the rest of our gallery.

Nathan Hartono in Sing! China

The homeboy kept his participation in Sing! China a complete secret and word got out only after the first episode aired (nice one, Nathan). From there, all hell broke loose—in a good way, naturally—and the 25-year-old has been continuously making waves on the show, even scoring the highest score of 93.65 to come out tops in last week's semi-finals. Heavily tipped to be the “next JJ Lin” with the potential to break into the Mando-pop market, Nathan has the entire package, from looks to vocals and musical capabilities. As one of the final six contestants to be battling for the championship title tonight, Nathan, the only member from Jay's team to make it into the finals, will be performing at least two songs tonight, including a duet with his mentor.

Go out there and make us proud, Nathan!

Kit Chan in I Am a Singer Season 3

Kit is the first Singaporean contestant to partake in China’s wildly popular I Am a Singer TV programme and boy did she blow everyone away with her nuanced performances that were gentle, emotive and stirring. She may have got out of the race very early in the competition, but the local songbird left such a strong impression on the minds of the audiences that she is now enjoying a career revival in China. Never mind that she didn’t win the competition, performing on such a grand stage was in itself an honour.

Alfred Sim and Tay Kewei in The Voice of China 4

He’s the winner for 2014's Channel U Project Superstar singing contest and the selected Singapore representative for The Voice of China 4 from a round of closed door auditions; she’s a local singer with a few albums under her belt and was invited by the organisers to take part in the blind auditions. In case you haven’t heard, the two singers are also a pair of lovebirds and tied the knot in January last year. Both of them failed to make the cut for the final 48: while Alfred impressed the judges with his vocal chops, they were not so floored by his remixed edition of Faye Wong's 'Wo Yuan Yi'; on the other hand, Kewei's nerves got the better of her during her audition round, which saw her performing with the er hu too.
