It’s been another successful year for the President’s Star Charity as the annual charity show raised a whopping S$8.3 million – the highest amount ever – for 59 beneficiaries after an evening of star-studded entertainment and heart-warming stories last night (Oct 14).

The programme kicked off with a bang (quite literally) with the very first performance of the night by drum troupe Wicked Aura, followed by a mesmerising display with lasers by French contact juggler Mickael Bellemene. Elderly and special-needs performers from I’m Soul Inc then teamed up with Taiwanese ukulele player Feng E and local singer Sufie Rashid for two songs.

Local actors also put on their dancing shoes to do their part for charity. Young artistes Nick Teo, Edwin Goh, Tay Ying, Fang Rong, Farhana M Noor and Nithiyia Rao thrilled with an energetic hip-hop number, while Zoe Tay shone in a stunning solo contemporary dance performance with kinetic light spheres, impressing with powerful and graceful moves that made her look more seasoned than someone who only had seven lessons (as she previously told us she was set to take on).

“[The training] was difficult,” admitted an out-of-breath Zoe to hosts Chua Enlai and Glenda Chong after her presentation. “After the first practice, I was bruised all over and I almost wanted to quit! (laughs) But at the end of the day, [knowing that I was doing this to] raise funds for the beneficiaries kept me going.”

Special guests from overseas included Hong Kong superstar Eason Chan, Malaysian R&B diva Dayang Nurfaizah and Filipino powerhouse trio TNT Boys. Eason treated the audience to his very first live rendition of ‘Feng Kuang de Peng You’, Dayang brought the house down with her earth-shaking vocals, and the TNT Boys took on Beyonce’s ‘Listen’ as effortlessly as if it were a children’s jingle.

The final performance of the night was a joint effort by The Purple Symphony, the Purple Choir Kids, visually handicapped singer Wai Yee, local singer Aisyah Aziz, as well as President Halimah Yacob herself and her husband, Mr. Mohamed Abdullah Alhabshee.

Throughout the two-hour show, the spotlight was shone on several beneficiaries who had the chance to tell their stories through short interview clips with local artistes such as Rebecca Lim and Kym Ng. The videos also highlighted some of the organisations dedicated to helping these people, as well as how each and every donation, no matter how big or small, can go a long way.

At the end of the night, after receiving several more cheques from various companies on stage, the tally of donations from telepoll hotlines, online donations and corporate donors had soared to $8,308,945 - over S$1 million more than last year’s S$7.66 million.
