C.L.I.F. 4 may be a drama about police officers, but its actors have had their share of mischief

She plays Inspector Huang Zhi Jie in the CID team and he plays Senior Staff Sergeant Zhang Gui Xiang, but in real life Rui En and Elvin Ng have both had a brush with the law. And they weren’t the only actors in the Channel 8 drama C.L.I.F. 4 who have ever misbehaved.

In the fourth installment of the police procedural series, Rui En’s character gets promoted to a working mother with a newborn baby, and Elvin trades his hefty traffic police gear and motorbike for navy Bermuda shorts and a lightweight bicycle to play a community patrol officer.

“I had complained that the traffic police uniform was stuffy and equipment too heavy, so they gave me this!” Elvin said. “I feel a little insulted — Yusuke (Fukuchi) gets to be a Taiwanese Interpol officer and (Zhang) Yaodong is assigned a smart uniform in his first C.L.I.F. appearance, but I have to wear shorts!”

At the C.L.I.F. 4 lensing ceremony held yesterday at Mediacorp, the drama’s cast were joined by a host of actual men and women in blue. And to look the part, Rui En, Elvin, Ya Hui and Yaodong turned up in their uniforms.

With the heavy police presence around, we just had to ask the cast: What’s the worst they’ve done, and what does C.L.I.F. mean to them? Click on to find out!

C.L.I.F. 4 debuts September 6, 9pm on Channel 8.

The worst thing I’ve done: Speeding

C.L.I.F. stands for courage, loyalty, integrity and fairness, but to you, what do C, L, I and F stand for? Courage, love, integrity, friendship — these are the tenets in my life.

The actress is no stranger to portraying a mother on screen, but it’s the first time she’ll juggle a career and parenting in a role. “I’m actually looking forward to playing a working mother,” she said, “and balancing the responsibilities of and managing the conflicts between work and family life.”

She expressed her admiration for working mothers. “It’s tough, really,” she said.

Rui En’s young co-star in CLIF will be a 4-month-old baby, who will play her newborn, and the actress says she hopes the executive producer will select a quiet, good-tempered infant for her.
Beneath Rui En’s cool exterior, she’s got a soft spot for babies. “When I see babies, I react they way I do when I see my cat: I just want to kiss them. But babies find it scary when a stranger comes so close, plus I’m a rather gruff person,” she said.

But her affection for children stops there; Rui En said she has no desire to look after them 24/7.

Despite playing a mother in If Only I Could, which debuts May 30, the actress disagreed she was being typecasted. “When it’s time to graduate, it’s time to graduate, and I’m not afraid at all,” she said.

“The younger crop of actors can take the ‘idol’ roles — I’m looking forward to playing more mature and realistic characters.”

The worst thing I’ve done: I once snuck into Jurong East stadium to play soccer at midnight in my JC days. A local resident saw us and called the police, who showed up and chased us so of course we ran. We split up and I got away, but some of my friends were caught.

It turned out the authorities thought we were doing drugs, but once that was proven untrue the officers drove my friends home. The ones who escaped got caught in a downpour and we were soaked through, but we were so frightened we didn’t go home until the morning.

To you, what do C, L, I and F stand for? Character, love, integrity and food. Character determines how far you go, life is meaningless without love, and I eat a lot.

“I was hoping I would join the CID and crack the cool cases,” Elvin lamented of his relatively casual uniform of a white polo t-shirt and navy Bermuda shorts. “It’s the boy-next-door look.”

The actor said he was still getting used to his new uniform and would continually tug on his shorts because it made him feel awkward.

But if Elvin had to pick a profession that demands a uniform, it would be a police officer, albeit one who wears long trousers. “Sure, it’s more comfortable in this weather, but it reminds me of my secondary school days,” he said.

The worst thing I’ve done: In primary 1 or 2 I was curious about what happens when you dial 999 and make a police report. I called 999 so many times that my father received a warning letter.

And another time I lit matches and set some paper on fire in a cupboard — it’s fortunate I didn’t burn down my house. I had probably got fed up doing assessment books and wanted to get rid of them.

To you, what do C, L, I and F stand for? Courage to persist when you feel like giving up; loyalty to family and friends so they won’t betray you; integrity, so that you don’t do anything damaging to your character; and life is unfair, but we must learn how to overcome that.

The worst thing I’ve done: I cheated in a primary school computer class exam. Five of us sitting in the back row passed little notes among us during the exam, but I didn’t do very well in the end. And I was so terrified I never cheated in school again. Doing something wrong fills you with paranoia.

To you, what do C, L, I and F stand for? Courage, not being lazy, integrity and forever. If you’re lazy there’s a lot you won’t accomplish, and there isn’t enough time — even sleeping takes so much time. Laziness can ruin your life. And you need to think long term when it comes to realising your dreams.

As Hong Xi, the daughter of Terence Cao’s character, Bonnie won’t be appearing in blue in C.L.I.F. 4, but her choice of a profession in uniform is a flight attendant. “That was before I wanted to be a singer,” she said. “Flight attendants look smart and neat, in their short skirts and with their hair bunned up, and seeing them with their luggage cases made me want to fly too.”

“I thought about applying, but I gave up the idea because I wasn’t tall enough.”

The singer–actress recently launched her official YouTube channel and her first video is a cover of the theme song of 2015 family drama Tiger Mum, a clever choice to connect her singing career to her role in the drama as Huang Biren’s daughter. Roy Loi shot the music video and rearranged the track for her.

“I hope audiences will get to know a different side of Bonnie Loo through my music,” she said. Though she hasn’t written any material yet, she has always planned to post covers and new original tracks on the platform.

The worst thing I’ve done: I stole a guppy from a pet shop when I was 11 or 12, and I plucked mangoes from a neighbour’s tree.

To you, what do C, L, I and F stand for? Career, love and family, because my son is young, so I have to keep working for at least another 20 years.

In C.L.I.F. 4 Tian Wen’s character is involved in questionable business dealings, and the actor will shed his 70s disco a-go-go outfits for sharp suits and bookish glasses.

Though he wasn’t assigned to join the police force in this drama, he’s no stranger to law enforcement roles: He played a traffic police officer in the drama First Step in 1986 and a prison warden in 1991’s Behind Bars.

The worst thing I’ve done: I once grabbed a fistful of 20-cent coins to buy playing cards from a vending machine. I don’t think my parents know!

“My parents are strict, so I didn’t have much chance to flout the rules,” she said. “And Singapore is such a law-abiding society, how would I dare do anything illegal!”

Mei Xin plays a volunteer police office in C.L.I.F. 4, but she does hope she could do that in real life. “Police officers are righteous and their uniforms look so smart,” she said. “I wouldn’t dare be a nurse because I’m afraid of seeing injuries and wounds.”

The worst thing I’ve done: I’m a little timid so I’ve never anything terribly bad or illegal.

“I’m a good cop,” he kept saying of his character. “He does everything to protect his family and innocent people, and also a dark secret from his past.”
