It’s a new year, new drama for local actor Shaun Chen, who has confirmed his first drama for the year, Blessings 2. In the first season of the Channel 8 series, he played baking whiz Lian Wending who traveled through time, but this time around, he’ll be playing Lian Xuegeng, Wending’s father instead.

The one who will be doing the time traveling in Blessings 2 is Chen Hanwei, and the cast will also see the addition of familiar faces such as Rebecca Lim and Zhang Yao Dong, who will play new characters in the drama.

It was the second imaging session that Toggle popped by, and we were treated to elaborate outfits from the 1918s donned by Shaun, Rebecca and Nick Teo, who will each play characters from that era.

During Shaun’s imaging session yesterday (Jan 25), we spoke to him about his recent ‘second honeymoon’, and he shared with us why he thinks that having “overly obedient” kids is worrisome, along with his thoughts on acting alongside his old pal, Zhang Yao Dong for the first time – and being on-screen rivals with him.

Read on for more.

Shaun’s challenge of creating on-screen animosity with Yao Dong

Earlier this month, Yao Dong shared with us his excitement of working with Shaun for the first time in almost two decades, and Shaun expressed the same sentiments during his interview with us.

“His role has a villainous element to it this time around, and it will stand out more,” Shaun explained. “I’m really happy for him that he managed to secure such a good character this time around, and I’m looking forward to how he’ll bring his character to life.”

“After knowing each other for such a long time, this is the first time that we’re working together, and I hope that we’ll be able to show a new kind of energy on-screen. After all, we know each other so well; we’re also really close to Hanwei and the rest of the cast. At the end of the day, I hope our performance is memorable for the audiences,” the 39-year-old smiled.

While Shaun and Yao Dong will become reel-life rivals (and love rivals, too) for Blessings 2, he chuckled that there’s “no such thing” between them in real life, sharing that he hopes that there will be some action scenes between them to spice things up between their characters.

The 10-day trip to Hokkaido that “wasn’t quite long enough”

Shaun and his wife, Celine, celebrated the end of 2017 in a special way – packing their bags and heading to Hokkaido. What made it even more special was that the trip was just for the two of them, and their two daughters were left in the capable hands of his mother-in-law and helper, which meant that he and his wife went on a “second honeymoon” of sorts.

“I think traveling is something really important in everyone’s lives,” Shaun mused. “It doesn’t matter where you go, but what’s important is that you’re able to relax. Work takes up so much of our time and gives us so much stress, and (for my wife), she has to handle everything that happens at home, so for us to be able to go on holiday to let loose is great.”

Naturally, he and Celine missed their two girls, Nellie and Neia, a lot, and kept in touch with them through daily video calls back home.

“Thankfully, my girls are quite ‘sticky’ to their grandmother, and while Nellie would sometimes ask her, “Where’s mama? Where’s papa?” Once my mother-in-law said that we’ll be back soon, she’d just accept it and move on,” Shaun chuckled. “We spent 10 days there, but I think it wasn’t quite long enough. Ideally, we’d be able to spend two weeks there, so we missed out on some places that we wanted to visit. I had to rush back for filming, so maybe next time!”

With the two girls being too young to enjoy traveling with their parents(Nellie turned 2 about a month ago, while Neia turned 6 months old today), Shaun grinned that he and wife still plan to go on a holiday once every year, and because it’ll be tiring for both the parents and the girls to go on holiday together, he’ll likely have to “abandon” them once a year until they grow up a little more to be able to fully take in the sights and sounds abroad.

When is Shaun intending to have his third child?

With the arrival of Neia last July, Nellie has understandably been a tad upset that the attention, which was once fully on her, now has to be shared with her little sister.

“Sometimes she’ll get angry when she sees us carrying her sister more,” Shaun shared. “Then we’ll tell her that it’s because mei mei (little sister) is still young, and she can’t walk on her own, so she needs us to help her (…) Her temper still isn’t great though, when she gets upset she might throw stuff around, but it’s good that she’s doing that, because that means we have a chance to correct her and teach her what’s right and wrong.”

The actor chuckled that he’d rather his children rebel from a young age. “If they’re too well-behaved from a young age, I’ll actually be a bit more concerned. If they’re too obedient, there won’t be any chance for us to correct them. When they grow up, they might start rebelling then and we won’t have as many chances to teach them properly – all these values have to be instilled from a young age.”

With two princesses in the family, does Shaun intend to expand his brood further?

“It’s too early to talk about that – do you know how tiring it is to look after two children?” he said in mock despair. “I think we’ll have to wait about two years, when the girls grow up a little more, before we can talk about that. We’ll let nature take its course, but having one more two years later would be the perfect time frame.”
