Stars’ #MothersDay tributes on social media

Nope, it wasn’t just your imagination: yesterday (May 13), social media feeds everywhere were bombarded with an endless stream of Mother’s Day tributes to mums, grandmothers, mums-to-be and mother figures. Local stars also got in on the action, sharing pictures both recent and #throwback-worthy alike to appreciate all that their very own Superwomen have done for them.

Newly minted mama Cheryl took the opportunity to reflect on the start of her motherhood, musing that it is the “first time I feel different this Mother’s Day, a deeper gratitude towards my mama and late popo for the things they’ve done, for raising us up, and giving their all”.

Instead of spending Mother’s Day in Singapore, Carrie and her mum jetted off to Taiwan, where the actress declared she would bring her on a tour to indulge in some of the cities’ yummiest foods. Coincidentally, it was also her mum’s birthday, which probably made it even more worth celebrating.

Shaun took the opportunity to dedicate this day to his mum, and well as his wife Celine. “Thank you laopo (wife); you’ve worked hard. I hope your wishes come true, and continue to stay youthful, beautiful and healthy. I love you laopo.”

Meanwhile, Celine also posted a snap on her personal page, chuckling that taking photos with her girls, Nellie and Neia, was “harder than climbing up to the skies”. So. Cute.

Tay Ying’s snap with her mum, Hong Hui Fang, came complete with this adorable filter. She previously revealed that her mum has skin “that’s even better than mine”,  and we can only say that we definitely know where Tay Ying got her flawless skin from.

Kewei posted a throwback photo to the day she first became a mother. Momo (as her baby boy is affectionately known) was all of 12 hours old, but already opened his eyes to gaze lovingly at his mummy.

Coincidentally, she also posted a video of Momo’s first words on Mother’s Day, where Alfred was trying to encourage him to say “papa” (daddy) again. Clearly, Momo was very unimpressed by his parental units and let out a “I don’t want” instead.

“Darling, when you grow up you have to stick to mummy this much too, okay?” Fann captioned her photo, in which Zed was seen clinging to his mum’s leg (is that his way of making sure that she doesn’t go anywhere without him?)

In her latest photo with Baby Qi, Joanne called motherhood an “invaluable” process, musing that she “looks forward to the challenges ahead”. She also thanked her husband, Qi Yuwu for “believing I had what it takes to be (a mother)”. So sweet leh.

Of all the musical collaborations the Mandopop singer has ever done, his mother is probably still his favourite duet partner.

“My first Mother’s Day present from #happyAJ and #happyAlexa!” Yvonne declared on her post. The kids (sponsored by their dad, Alex Tien) picked out a red cake mixer for their mother, which led Yvonne to hashtag her post with #You’reReallyTestingMyBakingSkills #HubbyISeeYouNoticedHowBoredIAmHere. Now we know to keep our eyes peeled on her feed for the pastries this super mum will be whipping up.

“Wishes my mum, my laoma (mother) in 118, my Godma, my son’s mother* and all mothers in the world a very happy Mother’s Day! (sic)” Dennis captioned his post, which included photos of the said mothers in his life.

It looks like all is well between Stefanie and her son now as she posted this drawing that her son presumably drew for her. Considering that he’s all of five years old, he probably can’t carry (or even afford) a bouquet, so we guess the hand-drawn flowers surrounding his mama in the picture will have to do for now.

“There’s no way we can ever repay our mothers for what they’ve given us,” Zen mused on his post (with a very cheem Chinese quote, no less), where he attached a snap of his mother, wife and kids. Not only did that quote strike a chord with us, we added a new profound saying to our little book of Chinese quotes. Yay.

“Happy birthday, mum! You said that Cherie Chung is your idol, so I edited her face over yours,” Sora captioned her post. “It really wasn’t easy for you back then. You looked after my rebellious brother and I (I wasn’t rebellious) on your own, and had your share of ups and downs.”

She chuckled that she is thankful that her mother is “better than you were last year. After reading more, you’ve become more knowledgeable and you know how to maintain your looks now, so you look younger than before!”

“Happy Mother’s Day to my mum, who also played the part of a dad in my life.”

“Please treasure the family you have around you. My child, you've grown up in the blink of an eye. Mummy used to show you the world while holding your hand, but where has all that time gone? Mummy misses you,” Yi Fong posted. She also included photos of Eleanor from when she was much younger and we must say, our jaded hearts melted just that little bit from Yi Fong’s sincerity. BRB, calling our mums to tell them we love them.

Eleanor also posted a throwback photo (this snap was taken 14 years ago!) of herself with the most important person in her life with the simple caption, “Happy Mother’s Day!” We’re sure she saved all her words to tell her mother in private.

Wait, that’s Hong Ling’s mum? At first look, we thought that was another of Hong Ling’s friends, given how young and fashion-forward the other lady looks. Turns out, Hong Ling feels the same way, as she hashtagged her post with #MyMumIsSoCool and #ITaughtHerHowToPose.

In an emotional post to her grandmother, Kate wrote, "I think you might be the silliest person in the world. You don't know many words, but you wanted to raise your children and grandchildren on your own. You worked as a helper, washed cars, cleaned houses and made handicrafts. You refused to spend your hard-earned money on yourself."

"You sacrificed your dignity to give me a safe home. You gave up your freedom to give me a normal childhood. Your happiness didn't matter because you always thought about how to make us happy,” she continued.

"How I wish you wouldn't be so silly, and how I wish that you wouldn't use your pain to give us our happiness. Pain brought you to heaven and our happiness has become our sin. You often said that you were paying us back in this life for what you owed us in our past lives. In my next life, I won't forget what I owe you from this life. In our next lives, let me be your silly mother and let me protect you and be your safe haven. Happy Mother's Day, and I hope you can truly be happy."

"There's someone who's even greater than mothers in this world, and that's the person who brings their child up single-handedly. To the grandmother I love the most, whom I will always see as my mother."

Belinda posted these photos as she visted her mother, captioning her photo with "I hope you are smiling from heaven knowing that your 3 children have not forgotten about you."

She added, "Time hasn't made me miss you less, on the contrary, I miss you even more. However, being able to sit by your side quietly, without saying anything, I'm satisfied (...) Wishing a happy Mother's Day to my most adorable mummy!"

“Just 4 Derps from the #WooWooFamily wishing all mothers a Happy Mother's Day! P.S: Imho, every day should be a Mother's or Father's day, (sic)” Jayley quipped on her post. If there’s one correction that we’d make, it would be replacing the word ‘derps’ with ‘cuties’.

Hayley posted a same same, but different snap captioned simply with, “Happy Mother’s Day!” We love that both Papa and Mama Woo are as young as heart as their twins, which also makes for adorable photos.

“Happy Mother's Day Mommy! You are the best! #LoveYou,” Felicia chirped. We clearly see where Felicia got her good looks from (her mama even has a matchy-matchy short crop!) and it’s super heartwarming to see that Felicia and Jeffrey’s parents get along so well with their future in-laws.

The actor remembered his onscreen mothers Xiang Yun and Chen Li Ping as well as his real-life mama, whom he dubbed “my one and only Wonder Woman who brought me into this world 33 years ago”. “My mother may not be tall, but she raised me and my siblings with a huge heart. She may not be highly educated, but she taught me how to be a good person”, he wrote.

Also, we can’t get over how utterly adorable Romeo and his mum look in that picture. He’s certainly the spitting image of her!

The up-and-coming starlet wished her superstar mum Chen Xiu Huan - a.k.a. her “hero” - a Happy Mother’s Day and thanked her for being her “biggest supporter and cheerleader”. “You mean the world to me, I love you so so so much”, she wrote, to which Xiu Huan responded with a comment saying, “Can’t describe my love for you. Thank you for being my daughter. I love you!” All together now, everybody: Awww…

Another post that got us all emotional was that of the actor and Sam Willows crooner, who lost his mum to cancer when he was 12. He shared old photographs of his mother with a single word in the caption: “forever”. Like many of his followers pointed in the comments section, we believe she must be really proud of her son.
