About two weeks ago, a couple made headlines and drew ire across the island when they were fined for faking their address in order to get their kid into a prestigious primary school.

While the questionable local culture of extreme kiasu-ism has clearly driven some parents to practically become criminals for the sake of their little one’s education, Stefanie Sun is not one those people. In fact, the internationally acclaimed, Lion City born-and-bred songstress chose to do things the hard but honest way when it came to ensuring a spot for her five-year-old son next year: she signed up as a parent volunteer.

The 39-year-old revealed this rather inspiring fact during a press conference to promote her latest album, A Dancing Van Gogh, yesterday afternoon. And it doesn’t take much to guess what exactly her “job” there is: teaching children how to sing. Lucky tots.

When asked by the host (half-jokingly, we hope) why she didn’t just barge into the principal’s office and demand her boy be enrolled immediately simply because she is THE Stefanie Sun, the singer gave an incredulous look and remarked, “You think that would work in Singapore?” Maybe, maybe not – but we’re proud of her for not attempting to find out.

It is this laidback, down-to-earth quality that is one of Stefanie’s greatest charms (other than, y’know, the countless awards, sold-out concerts and millions of records sold). The entire Q&A session felt like a comfortable, casual chat, with her even going so far as to disclose some of her favourite haunts in town (Botanic Gardens and IKEA, FYI), and declare that she’s “more of a westerner than an easterner”.

“I usually just hang out at the places near my house, wherever kids like to go, or my favourite restaurants – same as everybody else,” she said, before adding self-deprecatingly, “Sorry, very boring.”

Oh, and she still takes the MRT too, as evidenced from an adorable anecdote she had to share involving her son. “I was taking him to his judo class and I told him, ‘Okay, we’re going to get on the train, but don’t ask people to give up their seats for me!’ That was quite funny,” she recalled, chortling.

At that time, Stefanie had yet to publicly confirm her second bun in the oven, and the seemingly random and unreasonable warning to her son came about because before that, the enthusiastic big brother-to-be broke the news to his entire class despite being told not to do so (then again, he’s only five, and who can blame anyone for being excited about a new sibling?).

According to her son’s teacher, they were having a lesson about giving up one’s seat to the elderly, disabled and expectant mothers on public transport, after which he raised his hand and announced, “My mummy has a baby in her belly.” “So there was a whole community of people who knew [about my pregnancy] but they were very respectful and kept it hush-hush,” said Stefanie.

Now that the cat is finally out of the bag, Stefanie can happily and freely speak about her experience as a second-time mama-to-be. “I remember during my first pregnancy, I was very anxious and read lots of books to find out what the best way to raise a child is,” she shared. “But now, I feel much more relaxed because I believe that you should just do what works and makes sense to you; it’s a personal journey that differs for everyone.”

However, one thing that “bothers” her is her husband, Dutch-Indonesian businessman Nadim Van Der Ros’s extra attentiveness during this period. Wait, but isn’t that a good thing?

“He tells me to be more careful and will offer to drive me around – the change was very sudden, as soon as he knew I was pregnant, he became a lot more affectionate,” she said, before adding with straight-faced mock indignation, “Why can’t he be like that all the time, is it so difficult? Why must he only treat me better when I’m pregnant leh?”

Nadim, we hope you’re reading this. Remember to pamper your wife even after she gives birth, okay? You’re welcome, Stefanie.
