Tried and Tested: The things women do for love

We’re a day from White Day (which falls on March 14) – a day where men who received gifts from women on Valentine’s Day return the favour. But wait, doesn’t that sound like what happens on Valentine’s Day?

Turns out the roses and shiny trinkets that the men in our lives showered on us on Valentine’s Day came a month early (at least, if we celebrate it the way it’s done in Japan, South Korea and China) – but never fear. Lest you think it’s too late to show your appreciation for the guys around you, or just want to show some extra love for the men in your life, you’ve got until tomorrow to come up with the best present ever.

We turned to the stars for their experiences on how (and what) they’ve gifted their other halves with special somethings every once in a while – be it handcrafted gifts from the heart, to small surprises that didn’t quite turn out the way they were supposed to.

And remember this, when you’re in love, everyday can truly be Valentine’s Day (or in this case, White Day).

Read on for more.

Do you consider yourself to be a romantic person?

Yes and no? I am sometimes a hopeless romantic, but I'm not a fan of the dramatics. Little thoughtful things like... buying food for me after work because you know I'll be hungry is great. (Laughs)

What's the most romantic thing you've ever done?

I once did a super “movie” thing (aka something you’ll only see happen in the movies). [I] went to pick up saga seeds then glued them on a card in the shape of a heart and gave it to my ex-boyfriend. The whole process took me about an hour. Quite romantic, right? (laughs) Oh, and I once painted a random portrait for Shane. Not of him though. (Laughs)

Have you ever prepared a surprise for a guy, only for things to not go according to plan?

I honestly don't remember planning any major surprises, but I'm the type who would randomly drop cards and notes or presents out of the blue. Shane has planned some surprises for me here and there – this is more of his forte!

What we learned from Kimberly: Sometimes, unexpectedly received cards and notes are the best sort of present (especially when they’re from the heart).

Do you consider yourself a romantic person?

I’d consider myself a romantic person - or not, depending on how you view it. A romantic event could just be going to the park and spending quality time together but I don’t think many people will agree with me. Romantic events to others might have to be specially planned, or a birthday surprise, but to me, a walk in the park can be really romantic as well and it all boils down to who you’re with.

What’s the most romantic thing you’ve done?

I guess it would be making an explosion box. It’s an interactive present because you can put photos and messages in it. I’m not really a present-buying person, or I try not to because I feel that it’s a very last-minute thing. For people I really care about, I want to go deeper than just buying a normal gift.

Have you ever planned a surprise for a guy, only for it to not go according to plan?

Yes! I planned that I’m going to bring a cake in at a specific timing but in the end he wasn’t back at the location at that timing so I couldn’t get the cake lighted on time and when he reached the location, the cake melted because I bought an ice cream cake. That didn’t turn out well but I guess the other party appreciated it because he knew that there was effort and thoughts being put into the entire operation. Things didn’t go as smoothly as I would have liked it to have, but yeah.

What we learned from Jayley: Being romantic doesn’t always means bringing out the big guns.

Do you consider yourself to be a romantic person?

No... Luckily my husband and I both are not very particular about being romantic so it takes the pressure off the both of us.

What's the most romantic thing you've ever done?

I planned a surprise birthday bash involving almost 50 friends!

Have you ever prepared a surprise for a guy, only for things to not go according to plan?

The first time I cooked for my boyfriend, thinking it was a sweet thing to do. However, I ended up very frustrated and unhappy at the end of the day instead of feeling any sense of fulfillment watching him eat the meal I spent the day preparing. That was when I realised I really didn't enjoy cooking!

What we learned from Kewei: You might end up discovering more about yourself while preparing a surprise for someone, so trying out new things doesn’t hurt.

Do you consider yourself to be a romantic person?

Definitely yes, I think receiving or writing a beautiful love letter is quite romantic. It's something that lasts forever.

What's the most romantic thing you've ever done?

I planned a birthday party for him. I told him that we were going for a workout, and tricked him into attending the surprise party. I booked a barbeque pit, prepared food and drinks and baked a birthday cake for him, and even invited all his friends to the party to surprise him.

Have you ever prepared a surprise for a guy, only for things to not go according to plan?

Yes! (laughs) I wanted to buy a pair of headphones for someone, but did not know which design he preferred. So I acted normal and struck up a conversation about different kinds of headphones with him. In the end he said 'Are you going to buy a pair of headphones for me?' I didn’t think I was that obvious though!

What we learned from Hong Ling: Asking someone directly about what he likes is probably a bit too obvious – maybe going through a mutual friend could’ve done the trick.

Do you consider yourself to be a romantic person?

I wouldn’t say I’m very romantic but probably more thoughtful? Like, I enjoy making handmade gifts like scrapbooking! The last time I made a scrapbook was probably about four years ago, though.

What's the most romantic thing you've ever done?

I’ve never really done anything very romantic but I surprised a friend by preparing their favorite dessert as a gift! It was a no bake double chocolate cheesecake! It’s one of my mum’s recipes and she usually takes about 2 hours but I took about double that time because I was very slow! (laughs)

Have you ever prepared a surprise for a guy, only for things to not go according to plan?

Not really. I love surprises – both planning one and being surprised but I’ve never really planned a surprise for a guy. I always try to surprise my parents on their birthdays but I guess I do it too often that they always know what I’m up to. They just play along with me even if they guess what I’m trying to do.

What we learned from Kimberly: If you’re not the best at springing surprises, find someone who will let you have your fun anyway.

Do you consider yourself to be a romantic person?

I don’t think so. Andie and I aren’t really the romantic type!

What's the most romantic thing you've ever done?

Cooking for him, giving birth to his children, and looking after the house is what I think is a day-to-day kind of romance that I always keep up with.

Have you ever prepared a surprise for a guy, only for things to not go according to plan?

No! I’m not really the romantic type, so I’m not really the kind who will plan surprises. But, if I could have one day for just Andie and I to spend together, I’d probably want to head to a hotel to soak in the bathtub, take a swim and watch television together. That’s enough for us!

What we learned from Kate: If you’re going to spend the rest of your life with someone, it may be a good idea to find someone who’s on the same wavelength as you are.

Do you consider yourself a romantic person?

Yes. I'm a hopeless romantic – it’s probably because I watched too many fairytales! (Laughs)

What’s the most romantic thing you’ve done?

I made an exploding box for a guy's birthday present! It’s the kind that opens up and has many layers where you can write down all your wishes and memories for that person.

(Ed’s note: This is the same kind of box that Jayley made as well – looks like the twin telepathy is strong with these two.)

Have you ever planned a surprise for a guy, only for it to not go according to plan?

Yes for sure, bought him a really expensive branded wallet that he really wanted but got scolded in the end for buying it.

What we learned from Hayley: Buying expensive gifts can be hazardous (not just only to your wallet), so tread carefully.

What's the most romantic thing you've ever done?

I always share my food with my guy friend whenever he asks if he can try my food.

Do you consider yourself to be a romantic person?

I guess so… Because I hate to share my food.

Have you ever prepared a surprise for a guy, only for things to not go according to plan?

I wanted to sneak up on a guy friend to surprise him for his birthday, but I choked on my saliva and spat on him instead. “Happui birthday”.

I’ve also prepared many other surprises in my head but they didn’t go according to plan because I… forget about them.

What we learned from Chantalle: If you’re a forgetful person, writing things down might probably help (unless you forget where you put your notebook).

Do you consider yourself to be a romantic person?

I can be, depending on my mood. (laughs) When I’m in a romantic mood, I won’t think about “rational” things like how expensive or troublesome or impractical a plan is!

What's the most romantic thing you've ever done?

I attended culinary classes in order to prepare some dishes. I learned how to make fried rice and yummy sandwiches for him!

Have you ever prepared a surprise for a guy, only for things to not go according to plan?

I haven’t really planned many surprises in my life, so thankfully, I don’t remember any bloopers!

What we learned from Paige: Anything goes when you’re in the mood for it (just be careful about going too far!)

He Yingying

Do you consider yourself to be a romantic person?

Nope, not really!

What's the most romantic thing you've ever done?

It would be talking to him on video call until the both of us fell asleep, and also dropping him off and picking him up from the airport when he went overseas.

Have you ever prepared a surprise for a guy, only for things to not go according to plan?

Yes (laughs) I wanted to plan a surprise trip for both of us but somehow he found out, so that didn’t really turn out well.

What we learned from Yingying: Being romantic can be an everyday thing – just reading about Ying Ying’s stories remind us of a coming-of-age drama we’d love to watch.
