Wedding bells to ring for Jeffrey Xu and Felicia Chin soon?

Earlier this year, we announced that local actors Desmond Tan, Ya Hui, Jeffrey Xu and Sheila Sim would be starring in a Singapore-Hong Kong production, and would be working with Hong Kong actors such as Wong You-nam, Liu Kai-chi and Law Kar-ying for the 20-episode drama, Bluetick.

Fast forward almost two months later, and filming has almost been completed for the series, and a press conference with all 13 cast members was held yesterday (May 8) at Food For Thought at the National Museum of Singapore. Throughout the media conference, the camaraderie amongst the cast was obvious, with many of them taking turns to poke fun at (or reveal secrets about) the others.

This carried on during their respective interviews with Toggle, where something was unknowingly revealed to us. The question was innocent enough, and was posed to everyone we spoke to: What are your plans for the rest of the year?

The response we got when we asked Ya Hui, Jeffrey and Sheila this question wasn’t quite what we expected, however, as Ya Hui declared that Jeffrey was intending to get married within the year.

Our ears immediately perked up. Married? Really? Did he already get down on bended knee and bring his relationship with Felicia Chin to the next level? After all, there’s no smoke without fire. In addition, Felicia revealed in an interview with Channel 8 during this year’s Star Awards that Jeffrey had already bought her engagement ring, but that she has yet to see it (she’s been trying hard to find out where he’s hiding it, but to no avail). At the time, Jeffrey would only let on that he would be proposing within “the next two years”, which is why we wondered if there were any developments that he could share this time around.

We had so many questions, but unfortunately didn’t quite have enough time to get them answered. The tight schedule was no deterrent, however, our curiosity saw us waiting for other media outlets to finish speaking to Jeffrey before we tried to get more from him, and here’s what he had to say.

The first question we asked Jeffrey was if what Ya Hui said was because he and Felicia were already engaged, but the actor was ever the professional, and explained, “I don’t think it’s the time to talk about this yet.”

He did, however, reveal that he has been thinking about tying the knot, but has yet to formally start discussing this with Felicia. “It has to be the right time, and right feeling,” he stressed. “I haven’t thought of when exactly I want to settle down, and I’ll be taking things one step at a time.”

As for his maybe-wedding, the 29-year-old let on that when it does happen, he will hand over the planning reins for the Shanghai wedding to his mother, whereas she will let he and Felicia call the shots for their nuptials in Singapore.

One more hint he gave us is that he “has been reminding Felicia to prepare” to bring their relationship to the next level, but as to whether we can expect good news from them (or if they’ve already gotten engaged), his lips are sealed – for now.

Another dose of rainbows and sunshine was from Sheila, who confirmed with us that she can finally go on honeymoon in September after tying the knot in January with 37-year-old banker Deon Woo.

“I’ll be busy with work, but in September, we finally have time to have our honeymoon!” she chirped. “Destination wise, we’re thinking of Europe, in particular, Italy. We’ll probably also take the opportunity to get down to baby-making when we’re there.”

Ya Hui and Jeffrey expressed their surprise at her sudden revelation, to which Sheila explained, “A lot of people have been asking me about having children since we got married, so I thought I should just address it (even though I wasn’t asked about it)!”

If everything goes according to plan, we’ll be welcoming Baby Woo next June or July, which will get Sheila started on her goal of having two children.

Sheila opens up about filming at Mount Vernon Sanctuary, where her brother was laid to rest

While Sheila is in a good place right now (as evidenced by the #sheilalovesherjob #sheilalovesherlife hashtags that often appear on her social media platforms), a not-as-well known fact about her venture into showbiz is that it was in part influenced by the loss of her older brother, Cedear, when she was 9.

Some scenes in Bluetick were filmed at Mount Vernon Sanctuary, where Sheila revealed is where her brother was laid to rest years ago. On an Instagram post dated May 7, she expressed that 25 years have passed in the blink of an eye, and that filming at the sanctuary gave her a lot to think about.

“From 1993 onwards, I came here a couple of times a year to pay respects to my brother. From the time I didn’t know much, to understanding how it felt to lose your family member. Here, I saw my parents cry, fight, blame themselves… These memories resurfaced one by one. Yes, we need to focus on the future. However, I’ll never forget you,” she penned.

We asked Sheila more about this, to which she explained, “I didn’t think about it when I first came here to film. However, there was one day when I walked out of the hall that we were filming in and it happened that the block at which my brother’s niche is was just outside the location. I sat there for a while, and that’s how these thoughts came to my mind.”

Continuing that she firmly believes that “everything happens for a reason”, the model-actress let on that if she had a chance to do it all again, she would still choose to step into the world of showbiz. “From my days of modeling over a decade ago to my acting career that only picked up in the later years, I think I’ve had a fulfilling career, and I won’t change any of that,” she affirmed.

Will Ya Hui fulfil her promise to Bonde Sham?

With filming drawing to a close (some of the Hong Kong actors would have flown home by the time you read this), we also asked the trio about how working on this jointly-produced drama has been.

“The energy that we have on set is amazing, and we’ve really enjoyed working with the director (Tony Law) and actors. We also want to give a special shout-out to our cameramen, who have been really dedicated and professional,” they gushed.

In particular, Ya Hui has gotten close to Hong Kong actress Bonde Sham, and even promised that she’ll bring her out to enjoy local delicacies on their day off. “It’ll definitely happen, and she said that she wanted to try kaya toast, so I’ve planned everything,” Ya Hui shared. “I couldn’t go out with them yesterday because I was down with a fever after getting a MMR vaccine ahead of her work trip to Japan, so I was quite disappointed.”

Being under the weather, however, didn’t deter Ya Hui from making sure that her presence was felt at the gathering that the cast and crew had, as she proudly declared that she cleverly edited herself into the group photo that they took.

“It just so happens that my drama, Babies on Board, started airing last night so I edited the photo to put myself on the TV screen behind them,” she chuckled. Jeffrey chimed in, “When the rest realised what you did, they couldn’t believe it!”

Poking fun at each other is a regular occurrence among this jolly crew, with Bonde quipping that she’s “not quite sure” if Ya Hui will be able to keep her promise, as their filming schedule changes constantly and they may end up with additional scenes to shoot before she flies back to Hong Kong next week. “Plus, she’s so busy!” Bonde added in mock despair. “Who knows if we’ll be able find time.”

After wrapping filming for Bluetick, Ya Hui will also be working on a yet-to-be announced local drama, and only revealed that she will be working on it with Sheila. “You’ll find out about the rest when the time is right, because they told us not to say anything yet!” she grinned.
