What on earth was in Sheila Sim’s 90 kg honeymoon haul!?

The actress says the European getaway with her husband may have made her a little more ready to have kids

Sheila Sim may have waited nine long months to go on her honeymoon with her banker husband Deon Woo, but it turned out to be “worth every bit of it” in the end.

“I was very busy with work over the last few months so I didn’t really have much time to spend with him, so when we went on this trip, it felt like we had just gotten married all over again,” the 34-year-old model-turned-actress gushed in a phone interview with Toggle on Friday (Oct 12), a day after arriving back in Singapore from her romantic three-week getaway.

The lovebirds visited two European countries, Greece and Italy, and the highlight was - without a question - their hiking adventure in the Dolomites, a stunning, Lord of the Rings-esque mountain range in north-eastern Italy - never mind the fact that they got into a small tiff after getting slightly lost on one of the treks (oops).

“I had this stupid and ‘brilliant’ idea to go off-course before joining back to the original route because on the map, it looked pretty near, but it turned out to be all steep climbs and grass with no man-made roads, so we got lost and got into a little bit of an argument,” she chuckled. “He was like, ‘See your idea? You should never go off-course!’ and I was like, “Chill lah, we will get back’. I think he got a bit irritated with me. (laughs)”

Thankfully, both they and their relationship clearly emerged unscathed, and Sheila lived to tell us her honeymoon tales, which include buying so much food (36 kg of it, to be exact) it needed its own suitcase, finding an elusive designer accessory she thought she’d never get, and how she may be less afraid of starting a family now.

Sheila could not stop raving about this restaurant in Greece

Toggle: This wasn’t your first time travelling with your husband, but did you learn anything new about each other?
Sheila: I think he learned more things about me! For example, my diet is very Chinese; I need to eat soupy things, noodles etc., so for this trip I told him that I was going to pack cup noodles because I was afraid I would get sian (bored) of all the angmo (western) food, but he was like, “If you’re going to eat cup noodles then you’re on your own because I’m going to go to the supermarket to buy ham and cheese” so I was like, fine, I won’t pack cup noodles.

In the end, I shocked him because I did very well! I learned to eat bread, which I never really liked, and I ate Florentine steak even more times than he did. I’m not usually an angmo food person, but I enjoyed every meal that I had there. I was surprised with myself.

Did you bring a lot of food back to Singapore?
Both of us share the same habit: we like to buy things for people, especially food, so we brought back one whole luggage full of food weighing 36 kg. How the hell did we hit 36 kg!?

What was inside?
We had truffle sauces, cheese, chocolate, olives, artichokes, ham, salami, packets of herbs and a lot of other stuff. It’s very bad because we encourage each other to buy things very easily. (Laughs)

How much did you spend on the food alone?
We didn’t dare to count leh. We spent so much more on food than we expected, but we didn’t exceed the budget that we set for ourselves either.

What else did you buy besides food?
There was this Gucci bag I’d been wanting to get for a very long time but it was sold out everywhere. We went to the outlet store [in Florence] and Deon told me, “You know what, you can forget it. It’s sold out everywhere, how could they possibly have it here?” And obviously I’m telling you this story because they had it there! I saw it and I screamed! I’m usually quite thrifty when it comes to luxury products but I’ve thought about this bag for so long there was no way I was never going to get it.

That was the very first store I walked into and after I got the bag I was like, okay, if I don’t get anything else, I would still be happy, and I really never bought much after that. (Laughs)

Did your husband get anything for himself?
This shocked me: he bought six or seven pairs of shoes. I honestly never knew he was such a shoe person. I think he couldn’t deal with the imbalance of shoes in the house (I have so many pairs in the cupboard and he only had four pairs). (Laughs)

So how much did all your luggage weigh coming back to Singapore?
[Quietly mumbles] 90 kg. Can you see how quietly I’m saying that? (laughs) One suitcase already had 36 kg of food lor, and we packed different clothes for different climates and for hiking. Throughout the whole trip I kept telling myself, it’s okay, I’m on my honeymoon. I kept making excuses after excuses [to buy things]. (Laughs)

Are you willing to share how much you spent in total for the entire trip?
We used miles so we didn’t have to pay for the flight tickets, and for lodging, I’ll have to ask my husband, but we didn’t stay in extravagant places. Other than that, I changed around S$5,000 – my husband changed even less – and we didn’t use it all up. Maybe the entire trip cost us around S$10,000? I think lah, I can’t be very sure.

Did you put on a lot of weight after the trip?
I put about 1.5 kg. It wasn’t that much because we hiked and walked a lot, but when I came back for filming today, my jeans were tight! Tonight I’m going home to eat steamed chicken and broccoli, I need to get back into shape. (Laughs)

So…can we expect a honeymoon baby?
Not yet, but you can probably expect a snowboard baby. We’re planning to go snowboarding in February which is why we’re not trying yet, but we will probably start trying in February.

A lot of people have been asking us about kids, and while we do want kids, a part of me was still not quite ready for it yet. But after this honeymoon, I feel like we got to do what we wanted to do [as a couple] and spend quality time together for three weeks with no interference, so if you told me I’m accidentally pregnant, it wouldn’t be as scary as I thought it would be.
