A little less than a year ago, Xu Bin became a dad at the age of 29. The China-born, Singapore-based actor announced news of his son’s birth on social media, where he posted photos of the bundle of joy, albeit with his face partially covered.

Little did we know that it would be one of the fleeting glimpses we would have of baby Ethan’s face (more on how he got his name later), as the protective parents decided to shield their son from the spotlight by keeping him under the radar - well, that was until his first birthday celebration at Xu Bin's talent agency NoonTalk Media's sparkling new office today (July 6).

So when we caught up with Xu Bin after the party, our first question we asked him was "Why now?"

“We wanted to keep a low profile, but we go out as a family too. Ethan is also attending playgroup activities, so we’re out in the public quite a lot,” he explained. “People have been taking photos of us, and I thought that I might as well lift the veil myself rather than to have his photos uploaded by others.”

That isn’t to say that he and his wife, Evelyn Wang, will be going all-out and starting an Instagram account dedicated to their bub, who turns one on July 10, just yet. Xu Bin mused that while he isn’t against having his son with him in future advertorials, there aren’t any concrete plans for now.

Apart from the baby's face, Xu Bin revealed his boy's English name, Ethan, to the media for the first time at the party. The proud papa said the name was chosen by his good friend,  the late actor Aloysius Pang.

“I told Aloysius that I’d need his help back when I was getting married. My English is really bad, so I thought that I should ask someone who’s great at the language to help,” he smiled. “While he was filming Beijing to Moscow, Aloysius really did his homework and gave me a list of 20 names, which included a guide on how to pronounce the name, along with their respective meanings."

The three names that he and his wife Evelyn shortlisted were Ethan, Zane and Jaydon, but they eventually decided on Ethan for a very simple reason: it was easy to pronounce.

Xu Bin chuckled, “We needed something that both of our parents would be able to pronounce, and this was the only one that fit the bill (…) I also hope that Ethan will grow up to be someone whose English is as good as Aloysius’.”

With Ethan learning to walk, we asked Xu Bin if there are plans to give him a younger sibling.

“We will have another child, but not yet. We want Ethan to grow a little older and be able to communicate with us better before we have another one, so that will probably a year or two down the road,” he shared.

Xu Bin let on that while he is hoping to have a girl (“daughters are usually closer to their fathers!"), Evelyn is hoping to add another boy to the brood. If their respective parents had their way, however, they’d have more than two children, but it’s something that Xu Bin said will have to be discussed again in the future.

What about twins, we asked.

“Do you guys know how hard it is to earn ‘milk money’?” Xu Bin declared with a horrified expression. “But since you mentioned it, I have to prepare for every possibility. I’ll work even harder from now so that I’ll be ready for twins if they really come along.”
