Ya Hui, Chen Li Ping (literally) take friendship to new heights

Generation gap? There is no such a thing for Chen Li Ping and Ya Hui, who clicked instantly when they met, and are now close friends despite their two-decade age gap. In the past, Ya Hui’s told us that she counts the veteran actress as both a mentor and a friend, and often celebrates special occasions, such as birthdays, together.

Their friendship has brought them to numerous places around the world and most recently to Hong Kong, where they jetted to for six days along with Shirley Wu, whom they chuckled has “half a foot in showbiz”. The reason? Shirley is married to former actor Chun Yu Shan Shan, who is a familiar face to those who loved his dramas, such as Stepping Out, back in the day.

Li Ping shared that their holiday was planned last minute, as she initially intended to head to Japan. “(Shirley) comes back to Singapore from Australia every year-end, and we usually go on holiday together. We happened to have time, so all three of us went on this trip,” she said.

“We wanted to go for a relaxing trip. We didn’t want to rush ourselves and end up exhausted when we came back to Singapore, so we took our time to eat a lot of good food before we came home,” Li Ping grinned.

When they were there, they had intended to conquer Dragon’s Back, which is hailed as one of the city’s best urban hikes. However, things didn’t go according to plan as Li Ping’s stomach was bloated after the first few days (“I think I ate too much!” she chuckled) and Ya Hui decided to conquer the ridge with her friends instead.

“We talked about it and prepared all our sports attire, but in the end, the only one among us who managed to do it was Ya Hui!” Li Ping sighed. Ya Hui let on, “It took about two hours for me to climb up (…) All my friends from Hong Kong told me that this is the easiest to hike and gave it a one-star difficulty rating. Those that have four or five stars will need proper training and preparation if we want to give it a go.”

Even then, she shared that she was super paiseh (embarrassed) as she trailed behind her friends, whom she let on go on hikes every week.

In the near future, the pair hope to be able to conquer another trail – this time, one of a higher difficulty. “We have all the necessary equipment ready, but this time around, we were there to eat and relax, so maybe next time,” they grinned.

Speaking of eating, the trio also visited a traditional tea house when they were in Hong Kong, which they decided they would never patronise again. “When they gave us the tea pot, they just threw it at us,” Ya Hui said. “You have to chase after the staff to get your dim sum, and it was so stressful!”

“It’s like you have to argue with them to get the food you want,” Li Ping added with a chuckle. “They can be quite impatient at times and their tone might not be the friendliest, but that’s just how it is there,” Ya Hui concluded.

As for their next trip, Ya Hui chirped that she would want to chase the Northern Lights in Finland, to which Li Ping mused, “I’ll go with her if fate permits. I think it all depends on timing and what’s happening at that point of time, and of course, if the trip is to somewhere far away, we’ll have to plan it in advance.”

After knowing each other for so long, they also have no qualms sharing the same room, as Li Ping revealed with a laugh, “All three of us have the same problem - nasal problems. There’s a lot of noise in the room (when we sleep), and we’d worry if we travel with light sleepers, but since we’re all the same, we understand each other well.”
