Yvonne Lim’s son: drama king and heartbreaker in the making?

Just when we thought interviews couldn’t get any more chaotic than the time we hung out with Kate Pang and her babies, in comes two-year-old Alex Junior a.k.a. AJ (son of Yvonne Lim and Alex Tien) to prove us all wrong.

The rosy-cheeked toddler is clearly one of those kids who isn’t afraid of strangers (his mum later confirmed this with us). In fact, he will gamely entertain or troll them, depending on whatever his little heart desires: one moment, he is quietly letting you apply lip balm on him, and the next, he is unabashedly exclaiming “no!” when you ask for a hug.

He also has a natural flair for the dramatic, a trait no doubt inherited from his award-winning actress mum. “I thought I was a good crier – I can do it within 10 seconds – but AJ can do it in five!” she exclaimed, sounding both proud and amazed at the same time. “Even his eyes and nose get red; we were shocked when we saw it for the first time.”

The whole family, including five-month-old Alexa, was recently back in Singapore for a week-long trip (the main purpose was to celebrate Yvonne’s dad’s birthday), and we took the opportunity to catch up with Yvonne, who is on a temporary break from showbiz after moving to Taiwan, and meet her adorable children for the very first time.

To our surprise, we also learned that it was Yvonne’s family’s first time seeing her daughter as well. “They only visited me in Taiwan while I was pregnant, but not after Alexa was born,” the 40-year-old explained. As expected, everyone just couldn’t resist carrying the little lass and gently squeezing her chubby limbs.

AJ checks out the books from his "loot" as his mum and sis look on

While we weren’t counting on AJ to sit still during the hour-long interview, we certainly didn’t expect him to be as active as he was. Halfway through our chat with his mum, the restless lad suddenly embarked on a mission to transfer as many books as he could from the shelf to the sofa. Before we knew it, the empty seat next to Yvonne was littered with all kinds of reading material.

One particularly hilarious moment cropped up when AJ pointed to a man on the cover of a business magazine from his “loot” and asked, “Who is he?” As it turns out, the mysterious figure happened to be Yvonne’s friend’s husband, and she was astounded that her son managed to recognise him.

Of course, the energetic little fellow wasn’t going to get away with making such a mess in a public space. Before we wrapped things up, Yvonne made AJ put back all the books one by one. He was almost halfway done with his chore when he started to become visibly tired, plonking down next to his mum and – much to her chagrin – shamelessly asking her to continue the clean-up for him!

She refused, of course – “Why must I clean up the mess you made!?” – and he was forced to finish everything up by himself. (Parenting done right, if you ask us.)

Then, out of the blue, we heard a sentence we never thought we would hear from a two-year-old tot: “I’m losing weight!”

Yup, that’s a future drama king right there.

She is the reluctant “bad cop” parent

“Among my friends, 80 percent of the mothers are the stricter parent. Why? We don’t want to be the ‘bad cop’! But usually it’s because the father doesn’t want to be it, so the mother has no choice. I hope it’s something my children can understand one day.”

“I have been approached with offers to film commercials with AJ, but back then he was much younger so I didn’t want to give us too much pressure. I have very high standards for myself. I previously did a commercial with my husband and I had so many expectations that I stressed him out! But now that AJ is older, I might consider it.” [Yvonne asks AJ if he wants to appear on television, and he excitedly says, “Yes!”]

AJ got to ride on the MRT in Singapore

[Yvonne asked AJ what he thought of the plane ride here, but he suddenly blurted out, “MRT!”] “Alex and his godmother brought him for a ride on the MRT. He doesn’t have much chances to take public transport in Taiwan (because I’m not very familiar with the city yet) so I wanted him to have the full experience here.

We also took him to the Army Open House (because he loves tanks and helicopters), to the zoo, and to Universal Studios.” [AJ starts talking about being eaten by crocodiles, and Yvonne explains that they saw fake crocodiles on one of the theme park rides.]

Yvonne no longer cares about her post-baby diet

“I pay attention to my diet in Taiwan (because I’m still breastfeeding) but in Singapore I don’t care – I just went wild and drank my favourite teh C every day! (laughs) But there’s still a lot that I can’t eat, such as spicy food, and I miss that a lot.”

“I’ve lived in Taiwan for close to two years but I still haven’t gotten used to the food. I mean, it’s great, but there’s a wider variety of cuisine in Singapore – you can get nasi lemak, roti prata, Italian pasta – whilst in Taiwan it’s more limited.

Once, I had such a bad craving for bak chor mee that I actually learned how to make it, and it turned out well! I’ve also made my own ngor hiong and claypot rice before. Some Singapore brands have been kind enough to send me cooking sauces, so I’m very thankful to them for that.”

She also misses acting and hopes to make a comeback next year

“I love acting and I never want to quit. I was originally planning to make a comeback but then I had Alexa, so things had be pushed back again. Hopefully it can happen next year, I just need to let the company know when I’m ready because they’re already waiting for me.

Sometimes I find myself practising how to act while I’m doing mundane tasks by myself, such as pouring milk for my kids. (laughs) I want to make sure that I haven’t gotten rusty!

Alex has asked if I’m interested to act in Taiwan, but it’s not the same: besides just missing acting, I miss my colleagues and all the people I’ve worked with; we’re like a family, and I miss that sort of environment. In Taiwan, I don’t know anyone.”

“I always feel very happy when I come back to Singapore because wherever I go, people will talk to me as if they’re my family members, asking, ‘Oh, you’re back from Taiwan? Where are your kids?’

The other day I called a restaurant to make a booking, and when they found out who I was, they asked me if I needed a high chair. I was like, ‘You know me so well!’ (laughs) It’s very heart-warming because I feel very loved and missed.”

She wants her kids to study in Singapore

“In Taiwan, students learn traditional Chinese writing, while in Singapore, they learn simplified Chinese and hanyu pinyin, which is more suitable. Right now, AJ is in a bilingual pre-kindergarten, so when he comes back to Singapore – hopefully, from primary school onwards – he’ll be more used to speaking English as well.”

AJ is already in love with girls?

We recently had a gathering [with fellow celeb pals Shaun Chen, Aileen Tan, Chen Xiu Huan, Hong Hui Fang and more], and AJ was so happy because Shaun’s and Carole Lin’s daughters were also there! He kept wondering, ‘Oh, which mei mei (little sister) do I want to play with?’

What do I do!? I think my son is already in love with girls! (laughs)” [Ed’s note: Could that have been a glimpse of AJ’s future as a handsome heartbreaker?]

Yvonne is learning a lot from her kids

“Since becoming a mother, my tolerance level has increased so much. I feel that there’s a lot that we can learn from children, for example, they can cry about something that upsets them, then quickly forget about it later. Sometimes I look at them and I think, ‘I should learn from my kids.’”
