Ed Sheeran’s concerts in Singapore literally get bigger and bigger every time he returns to our sunny shores.

The first time he was here in March 2015, he performed for 5,000 at The Star Theatre. Two years later in November 2017, the audience size doubled as he strummed the night away at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Last night (April 26), the British crooner drew a massive crowd of 51,000 to his Divide Tour at the National Stadium.

This obvious growth certainly has not escaped the attention of the ginger-haired 28-year-old. “This is the biggest show I’ve ever done in Singapore!” he remarked right after his energetic rendition of ‘Castle on the Hill’, the first song of the night. He later mused, “It’s one thing to play in stadiums where you’re from, but it feels surreal playing in a completely different country and seeing the same number of people coming out to sing along to your songs.”

And sing along Singapore certainly did. Whether it was older faves from his debut album like ‘The A Team’, recent chart-toppers like ‘Perfect’, or classics like ‘Thinking Out Loud’, concertgoers were united in musical solidarity, turning the sprawling arena into one colossal karaoke session (and yes, we proudly joined in too).

This certainly proved Ed right -- he had deadpanned, “I promise you’ll know most of these songs because they’ve been played to death on the radio.”

(Continued on next slide: Ed says this show was “really special”)

Ed also actively engaged fans as his backing vocalists a couple of times. For instance, during ‘Give Me Love’, he split the stadium into two halves: one side was tasked to sing the lower pitch of the word “woah”, while the other was instructed to sing the higher pitch. The effect of such an enormous congregation harmonising? Goosebump-inducing.

Besides the repertoire of terrific tunes, another thing that kept us entertained was Ed’s constant banter with the audience between almost every song. At one point, he good-naturedly poked fun at a tiny percentage of folks who might not have gone to the showcase willingly, namely boyfriends who were there to accompany their girlfriends, or fathers who were there to chaperone their kids.

But the ribbing concluded with a moving and heartfelt message to this supposedly reluctant group from Ed: “You’re doing it for someone you love to make them happy, and I want to thank you for that.” Awww…

At the end of the two-hour spectacle, we learned that the audience wasn’t the only one that had an insanely good time. “I do a lot of shows,” Ed said, “But this one was really special.”

Singapore loves you too, Ed -- ain’t no divided opinion about that.
