Insta-buzz: What the stars were up to this week

From happy news (congrats, Tay Kewei and Alfred Sim!) to tragic losses (our condolences to Pierre Png and Daniel Ong) to frustrated rants (what’s up with Derrick Hoh?) and everything in between, here’s what happened on celebs’ social media pages this past week.

Momo is going to be a big brother!

Yup, his parents Tay Kewei and Alfred Sim are expecting their second child! The couple made the happy announcement at the end of their new music video ‘Mo Mo Ai Zhe Ni’, a song that was written for their two-year-old son Momo, who looks absolutely delighted to be welcoming a new member into the family. Well, he is about to be “promoted” to be a big brother, after all!

Pierre Png’s dog passed away

After two months of battling kidney failure, the actor’s beloved pet pooch Oreo crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Thursday. “Thanks for 14yrs of happiness and memories! I wouldn’t exchange them for anything. I love you and will miss you, terribly!!! (sic)” Pierre wrote. His wife Andrea De Cruz also shared a photo with the caption, “Sleep tight my quirky one.”

Rest in peace, dear Oreo.

Daniel Ong had to put his dog down

Also having to bid a heartbreaking goodbye to a pet this week was Daniel, who did the “toughest thing [he’d] ever had to do” on Friday when he put his dog Cino down. According to the former DJ, Cino was struck by “[t]he most aggressive of doggy Cancer (sic)” two months ago.

“Thank you Cino for being such a brave boy, a good boy, a companion, guardian, and family. I’m gonna miss our walks, our talks, our moments, your waggy tail, your smile, your unquenchable thirst for food and treats and you greeting me every single morning without fail until you couldn’t anymore,” Daniel wrote in tribute.

“You saw me through sadness, plenty of happy times and the whole family is gonna miss you,” he continued. “Go forth and run in the fields in the sky where you will be free, free of pain, and have boundless energy. Hope the rainbow bridge is everything it is.”

Hong Hui Fang celebrated her birthday with her family...

The veteran actress celebrated her 60th birthday on January 7 by going out for a seemingly simple dinner with her family (husband Zheng Geping and kids Tay Ying and Calvert Tay), but according to her caption, such a gathering is hard to come by, especially on such a special occasion.

The celebrations for the family didn’t end there. A few days later, Calvert finished his two-year National Service, and his parents and sister were all there to show their support at his ORD parade. However, Geping made sure to include a cheeky reminder that he will soon be called back for reservist. In the meantime, enjoy getting your pink IC back, Calvert!

Another birthday girl this week was Ah Jie, who celebrated her 52nd birthday a few days in advance of the actual date (January 10) at a gathering with lots of booze, food, and friends, including Pan Ling Ling, Huang Biren, Jacelyn Tay, and Michelle Chong. Oh, her husband Philip Chionh was also there, and while Zoe covered his face with a sticker, you can see the unedited version on Michelle’s Instagram page.

Sharon Au’s throwback made memories come flooding back

In her own birthday tribute post to Zoe, Sharon shared a couple of nostalgia-inducing magazine photos of herself, Zoe, and Fann Wong from an undisclosed time period (they look to be from around the early 2000s) and wished the “remarkable actress, a role model for everyone in the entertainment industry” a “Joyeux anniversaire”.

Ann Kok had four birthday cakes

Well, “3+1”, to be precise (she said the last one was only given to her after she pouted - but who would withhold cake from Ann!?). The actress, who turned 47 yesterday, gushed about having so many people to celebrate her birthday with, adding that while she is “not good in expressing [herself] in words”, she is “really grateful [and honoured] to receive so much love”.

Wong Cho Lam celebrated his birthday at Disneyland

It’s no secret that Disneyland is one of Cho Lam’s favourite places. After tying the knot with Leanne Li and later celebrating their daughter Gabrielle’s 100th day there, the host returned to “The Happiest Place on Earth” for a 40th birthday get-together, proving that one can never be too old to party with Minnie Mouse.

Even animals were not exempt from birthday cheer this week. One of Tanya’s two feline fur-kids, Choupi, turned one and was treated to a cake made with meat. While she didn’t exactly look impressed in the video of her mama singing the birthday song to her, we’re sure little Choupi felt the love.

Derrick Hoh went on a rant and cleared his social media posts

If you happened to come across Derrick’s now-empty Facebook and Instagram pages and wondered where all the content went to, well, it appears the singer deleted everything in a fit of frustration, after sharing a bunch of raw, angsty thoughts on Instagram Stories.

“I am tired of being ‘an artiste’. All I wanted was to make music for my real fans and friends. I no longer want my life to be the subject of anyone’s entertainment,” he wrote. “To whom it may concern, [f***] you, [f***] you very very much. I don’t love you, I don’t hate you either, just stay away from me. Thank you very much.”

“[S***’s] so real, happening in Australia and a war is about to happen so no one really cares about which cosmetic brand you use for the day or how glam you look on Instagram,” he continued, before showing a clip of him deleting “an entire decade of worthless social media”. The only post he kept on Facebook was the “stupid ass video” of him doing the ‘Pen Pineapple Apple Pen’ dance, which is the most popular video of all time on his page.

He then ended his explosive rant with, “Stupid ass world. Give me my life back. And stay away from my family.”

Yikes. It’s unclear what sparked such a hostile reaction, but we hope he feels better soon now that he’s gotten everything off his chest.

Jay Chou came to Singapore for his concert tour…

The Mandopop king, who was in town for his two-night Carnival World Tour, took some time to chill at his friend’s house before the show on Friday, and it looks like his mum came with him as well.

That night, after the first show, he shared a video from the concert and put an irresistible offer out there: “If u happen to see me tomorrow in any restaurant don’t be shy (...) Say hi and it’s my treat (sic).”

Waiting for viral photos and videos of people showing off their meal that was paid for by the Jay Chou.

BLACKPINK’s Rosé called on fans to help save her home country

These heart-wrenching images of the Australian bushfires have been circulating all over social media as people show their support for those affected by the disaster. Rosé, who grew up in Melbourne, also shared the pictures earlier this week along with a list of links to organisations for her followers to visit and donate to.

“It breaks my heart to see this,” she wrote. “Australia is on fire and it has been for too long now. I am heartbroken for the people and homes suffering from the fires and the millions of innocent and beautiful wildlife creatures that are injured and dying right now. Australia is a place that I grew up in and I am so sad to see this happen to such a beautiful country (...) We can make a difference if we all join in. Please help to save my home country[.]”

Show Luo dedicated a sweet post to his mum

At first, we were wondering what occasion inspired Show to suddenly share a bunch of photos of him and his mum (was it her birthday? Or some version of Mother’s Day we were not aware of?), but then we thought: why would someone need a special reason to declare their love for their mama?

As it turns out, the singer had been looking through the photos on his phone, prompting him to urge his followers to take lots of pictures with their family members (instead of just their pets, food, scenery, friends, and lovers).

“It’s almost Chinese New Year. Have you made arrangements to go home and spend time with your family? There are no excuses, because excuses will keep delaying you. Family is more important than anything else,” he wrote. This is one filial chap, indeed.

The S.H.E member started watercolour classes a few days ago and we must say, for a beginner, she is pretty good! In fact, she has already joked about wanting to open her own art exhibition (which we are quite sure people would attend).

We guess we now know how Hyuna keeps her legs so toned, but we’re not sure if doing squats in platform heels is such a good idea, so please don’t try this at home, kids.
