MONSTA X wants to take over the world in 2018

It’s not everyday we get an interview this candid - at least, that was the thought that went through our minds as we wrapped up our interview with Korean group MONSTA X. The septet, which is in town for the HSBC Women's World Championship MONSTA X Special Show 2018 (it takes place tonight, by the way, for those of you who are suddenly inspired to attend), spoke to the media in closed door interviews held at the Resorts World Sentosa Convention Centre hours before their public press conference at Plaza Singapura.

One of the most impactful parts of their 20-minute interview was when maknae (youngest member) I.M declared (in English, no less), that one of MONSTA X’s goals for 2018 is to attend the Billboard Music Awards - an event that was attended by fellow Korean group BTS last year. BTS is the first ever K-pop act to be nominated for (and to win) a Billboard Music Award, and it looks like MONSTA X has their sights set on being the second.

This isn’t their only goal for 2018, however, as the group shared that not only are they aiming to make waves in Korea this year, but they’re also aiming for the top prize - a Daesang (grand prize) at the year-end awards ceremonies.

Not forgetting their roots, MONSTA X was constantly sharing their gratitude and love for their MONBEBE (MONSTA X’s official fan club name) throughout the interview, sharing that the most important thing in 2018 and beyond is that they’ll be able to be with their fans through thick and thin.

Does MONSTA X think that ‘DRAMARAMA’ is their best release so far?

Having won their first champion’s trophy on a first weekly music programme with their latest comeback, ‘DRAMARAMA’, we asked MONSTA X if they feel that the album is their best release so far.

“We don’t believe it’s the most successful part of our career so far,” they admitted. “We don’t believe there’s such a thing as one part of our career that’s more successful than the others because of all the memories that we’ve had together as a group. Rather than having hit the biggest success in our career so far, we think it’s the timing that was just right for us,” MONSTA X shared.

They added, “It’s the time that we’ve spent together with the fans and all the effort that we’ve put in until now that is more important, isn’t it?”

Having released a majority of “stronger” concepts throughout their almost-three year career (they’ll celebrate their third debut anniversary on May 14), Jooheon mused that one concept that he hopes that they’ll be able to try in the near future is trot, with his reason being that they’ve “never tried something like that, and it’ll be a something fresh for both us and the fans”.

Through the rain and sun for MONSTA X

With MONSTA X showing this much love to their fans, we weren’t in the least bit surprised when we found out that their Singapore MONBEBE are very much dedicated to the group too. With their open press conference being held at the Plaza Singapura front atrium, fans queued up for over nine hours in order to get the best spots to see MONSTA X.

Having waited in the sweltering sun for hours before their arrival, the skies decided to test MONBEBE even further minutes before MONSTA X made their entrance for the press conference with a downpour. Those with umbrellas opened them promptly and shared them with those standing around them, but for those that didn’t pack for wet weather, no rain could stop them from seeing their idols as we spotted a number of fans completely drenched after the press conference ended, but with huge smiles on their faces after having seen MONSTA X up close.

Throughout the press conference, the members also expressed on numerous occasions that fans should take care of themselves, and casted worried glances over to the fans just to check that they were doing fine throughout the press conference.

With this much love and dedication between the group and their fans, we’re convinced that MONSTA X’s wish of having their MONBEBE by their side throughout the years will come true, and that there will probably be more than one reason for them to celebrate this year.

Hyungwon's special message for MONBEBE

I don’t draw very well so I felt like I’d ruin it if I tried to draw too many things, that’s why I decided to just draw a heart and next to it is my message, which is ‘Thank you’ and ‘Love you’. This is for MONBEBE.
