OH SNAP: Celebs who love photography

It’s practically a celebrity’s job to look good in front of the camera, but there are also a number of famous folks who just as adept at the helm of a lens and shutter. Read on to meet some actors, singers and models who are also pretty renowned for their interest in photography:

Romeo Tan

Those who follow the 32-year-old on Instagram would be no stranger to his hashtag #romeophotologue, which he uses to document his impressive photography portfolio. We’ve even gotten the actor to help shoot some pictures for our features on Toggle, which he happily agreed to do when we asked (you can check them out here and here).

From what we’ve observed, Romeo specialises in capturing scenery and architecture, and he’s churned out some wicked bird’s eye view drone shots too. In 2016, he used his talent and hobby to benefit others by setting up a photo studio and exhibition for Channel 8’s charity programme Hearts and Hugs, after which he donated all proceeds to a trust fund helping two intellectually disabled sisters.

Ya Hui

If you check the #yahuiphotography tag on Instagram, you’ll be able to fully appreciate the scenic shots that Ya Hui has shared online. From these photos, we’d reckon that she has a thing for blue skies, fluffy clouds, rainbows and beautiful sunsets.

She’s shared with us in a previous interview that one of her favourite spots is Labrador Park, where she goes to clear her mind and snap photos as well. When the timing is right, she even shoots till midnight, and confessed that she’s attracted to clouds and nature the most.

Cherie Chung

Since taking a break from acting in 1991, the former screen goddess – who still looks as stunning now in her 50s as she was decades ago – has been busy with other endeavours, including photography.

In 2014, she opened her first exhibition called To Hong Kong With Love to show people the beauty of her hometown, and to capture as many natural landscapes as possible before they tragically disappear to urban developments (she’s an avid enthusiast for environmental conservation too). The 57-year-old has also shot for photobooks, including one for Korean skincare brand AMOREPACIFIC, and always gives back to society by donating the proceeds from sales to various charities.

BTS’s V

The idol admires Australian photographer Ante Badzim so much that he uses “Vante” (a combination of their names) as his own shutterbug “stage name” when he shares his shots on Twitter. Ante is aware of his famous fan, and even dedicated a picture to him online (which we can imagine V fanboying over).

V’s creations typically possess a dreamlike quality, whether he’s photographing random objects, strangers, animals or his own bandmates, which we reckon could also be influenced by his love for art. Handsome and talented – life really ain’t fair sometimes.

INFINITE's L

It’s no secret that L (or Kim Myung Soo, if you’d rather go by his birth name), is an avid photographer who published a photo essay book, titled Bravo Viewtiful back in 2013. In the publication, he shares photos that he took over the period of three months, and include snaps of day-to-day things that he immortalised with a click of his camera, and also illustrations, thoughts and messages from the idol himself.

His skills have also been put to use on more than one occasion, with one such example being him flying to Okinawa, Japan, with his labelmates Lovelyz to snap photos of them for their comeback in 2015.

Bonus: Not only did he take photos for them, he also did the calligraphy for Lovelyz’s album, writing the same words over and over again so that they could pick the “prettiest and most feminine” version of them all to use for their album. Now that’s dedication (and talent).

Karen Mok

The Hong Kong star may be known for her acting chops and singing skills, but did you know that she’s got another ace hidden up her sleeve? In line with her 16th studio album released in 2014, she also held the similarly titled Departures travel photography exhibition in Taipei and Beijing.

The 200 or so snaps consisted of pictures that she took while she traveled around the world with her husband for three months, and included snippets of their time in places such as the Atacama Desert, Amazon rainforest and Easter Island.

Chow Yun Fat

The veteran actor isn’t just the “King of Selfies” – he has a legit and long-running passion for film photography, preferring the old school method of working in a darkroom over the instant gratification of digital. He’s even stated that aside from his wife, the closest relationship he has is with his camera.

Over 20 years ago, Yun Fat’s sister submitted three of his photographs to a competition under a false name, and one of the shots – an artistic one of a bunch of tomatoes – placed third. In 2008, he held an exhibition with 18 of his behind-the-scenes snaps, and his personal favourite, of Gong Li getting her makeup done on the set of Curse of the Golden Flower, sold for over S$57,000 at a charity auction.

BTOB Peniel

Peniel held his first photo exhibit, Penography, last March in Seoul. On the day of the exhibit’s opening, he posted on his Instagram, “Penography photo exhibition D-Day ! Very excited and honored to be able to open my first photo exhibition. Please show it lots of love and support ! (sic)”

He’s even opened an Instagram account dedicated specially to his photography, which not only consists of snaps of nature, but also of his beloved dog, Pennie, and his friends as well. While some of his food snaps make our tummies growl in hunger, we hope that he updates it with more snaps of the world in his perspective.

Brad Pitt

There have been numerous instances where Brad surprised us (in a good way, of course) with his photography skills, but one of our favourites remain the black and white shots of his former wife Angelina Jolie he took and shared with W magazine back in 2008.

As reports go, he started taking photos of her just before 2008 after she gifted him with a camera for Christmas, and many of the snaps that he’s taken of her and their family are still widely circulated on the net today.

Kendall Jenner

Everyone knows that the Kardashian clan member is making it big as a model, but did you know she’s slowly gaining some traction as a photographer – and considering it as a serious career – as well?

Besides the classy black-and-white portraits she occasionally posts on her Instagram, the 22-year-old has also shot backstage images at fashion shows for W magazine and several covers, including one of her sister Kylie, for Love magazine. It’s been noted that her subjects often look relaxed and refreshingly candid in her snaps, which is very likely a result of them being friends or relatives of Kendall (making them more comfortable in front of her compared to a pro shutterbug they may not be as close to).
